Page! March j, 21)04 CAMPUS NEWS ■ Continued from Page I ships and infesting the citics with disease on one side of the screen or poster and then images of Jews on the other side. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the Holocaust, Rosenberg traveled to the concentration camps. He described his time there as "the most horrendously difUcult month of my life." He said, "Auschwitz is the most frightening place I have ever been. Rosenberg said it was very difficult to walk the path of death into the concen tration camp because hundreds of thousands of Jews had walked that very same path and had been killed there. "I couldn’t escape the idea that human beings capable of producing this defy my ability as a psychologist to make sense out of them," he said. The 1950s German program of reparations for Holocaust survivors who were damaged was another interesting psy chological phenomenon Rosenberg spoke about. He said it was easy for those who sustained physical injuries, but it was much more difiicult for those who sustained psycho logical injury. During the 1950s, most psychologists subscribed to a psychoanalyti cal approach. However, many survivors refused to accept being labeled as pathological just to receive reparations. As a result of this controversial program of reparations, many psychologists who subscribed to different approaches chose not to get involved. Rosenberg stated that for psychologists, there will never be a single model for studying the Holocaust. In addition to studying the survivors, the perpetrators of the Holocaust have also been a target for study. The Einsatzgruppen, or mobile killing units, killed about I million Jews. These people have since been described as ordinary men. After liberation, the Nazis were administered the Rorshach inkblot projec tion test in order to describe the personalities of these "killers." Many thought these psychological evaluations would reveal the sadistic nature of the Nazis. However, their profiles resembled those of itenirate creatures, meaning they were true believers who were fanatically invested in their cause. These fanatical measures were achieved because the Nazis perceived Jews as being genetically inferior rather than basing their perceptions on religious grounds. Rosenberg also discussed the more recent examples of genocide such as Rowanda, Kosovo and Yugoslavia. In closing he said, "How do we reconcile the genocide over here and the altruism on the other side?" CALLING ALL ANGELS!!!
