“Presence and Absence” exhibit now on
display in Johnson Hall
MARY ROBBINS

It is virtually impos
sible to breeze through
Johnson Hall without
noticing the breathtak
ing artwork decorating
the walls.
These beautiful
works are the creations
of Margaret Ellington
and Gayle Scott Lowry.
Ellington's photogra
phy and Lowry's oil
paintings comprise a
unique exhibit titled
"Presence and
Absence" that will be
on display until April 4,
2004 on the first two
floors of Johnson Hall.

scenes of people rush

Many photos show
people hurrying by in
everyday hallways.
The portrayal of move

quite successful due to
a camera effect that

white film, helps the
photos create a mysti

regarding the photos.

Lowry's oil paintings
primarily focus on
doors. All of Lowry’s
paintings seem to have
a gloomy, mysterious
motif. The rooms in the
paintings are mostly
barren, and the empti

wondering about the
events that occurred in
these dwellings.

In addition to the pho
tos and paintings, there
are two mixed media
installations titled
"Presence" and
"Absence." "Presence"
is a completely white
room with an open door
and a dress hanging.
"Absence" is a black
room filled with suit
cases, a phone with the
receiver on the floor
and a closed door.
These installations

two titles, "Presence"

define the exhibit.
