LUCAS Staff Writer It's the time of year where all things are in bloom. Spring has arrived and the excite ment of summer is fresh in the air. However, even with all of the great things that come with the spring sea son, this year it brought political diversity that is sure to continue as this election year progresses. The political debates that accompany an elec tion year abound on Meredith’s campus. Students on campus have shared their ideas and views on American poli tics by making signs and posters and placing them around campus. This is only the beginning of what will be a long match between two "heavy weight" politi cians. Are you ready for the political match that will be in all the newspapers and constantly interrupt ing your favorite televi- sioii shows? We have all made it through the first three rounds of the fight. April will begin round four, and the final elec tions seem so far away. It may seem odd to compare the race for presidency to a boxing match, but think about it; there are two candidates who are taking swings at each other, bouncing from place to place, hop ing that the next swing will take their opponent out of the match for good. It's okay for the politi cal race to get a little heated, but is it okay for Meredith’s campus to get overheated with political controversy? Most would say that this should not be a question, consider ing women had to fight for the right to vote and are still overlooked and undervalued in the American government. Why shouldn't the debate get heated and our tempers flare about the candidates we support? However, as intelligent women we should find a more appropriate way of expressing our opinions than vehemently portray ing our opinions as the single authority. This is what happened before spring break when students took a stake, put it in the ground and flung their ideas onto the stu dents, creating a question about who the signs were meant for. It does not matter whom the signs were meant for. It does matter how it divided the Meredith community. Like all women, we should be fighting for our place in the American goyerment, instead of among our selves. In a panoramic view it does not matter w hether I am pro this or con that, it does matter if there are women like me fighting for important issues. • itertianmiijtuwui Thf» nnU; I Nm v«liS «Wi ujlw 1 uc uiiiy , way issues regarding women are going to be resolved is if women try to solve them. If you do not believe women have issues, talk to a single mother who pays a day care bill that expohential- ly grows every year, if not every six months, or to a woman who does not get coverage for birth control from her health insurance provider, but have male co-workers popping Viagra pills for virtually no cost. We, as a women's col lege, should want to con quer these issues and so many more just like them. We are the next generation. This political year no matter how diverse the opinions may be, do not let political diversity divide our com munity. MEA Hosts the ever CASINO NIGHT! Wed.
