Although all of these evoke a sense of excitement, antici pation is the overwhelming emotion everyone is feeling: anticipation for the incoming freshmen. It is almost possible to feel the eagerness of the students to arrive with their fresh linens, unbent posters and towels with the tags still ft*3t’yCo‘HBS^ at Megan Hent/ee Freshmen (left to rigM) Christa Clocker, Amber LMesy. With over 400 freshmen this semester, the Meredith Community welcomes bright intelligent, energetic students to fill Stringfield, Vann, and Poteat residence halls and the large number of freshman commuters this semester. The freshmen are as excited as current faculty, staff and students are, eager to meet lifelong friends. Sadly, it may be true. Did you know that young Americans are the group least likely to register to vote? Without a political voice, it's doubtful that politicians will pay much attention to us. That's unacceptable. Young Americans have a voice that's nearly twenty million loud, and it's time that we made our voice heard. So I have two ques tions to ask all of you: have you ever considered the amount of power that you hold? And have you ever wondered how you could utilize that power and get your voice heard? One easy, accessible way is by registering to vote. Politics 941, the public leadership practicum, actively encourages Meredith students to take action. Our campus has a potential of roughly 2,500 votes: a virtual voting cash cow for any politician. In keeping with the dem ocratic tradition at Meredith, Dr. Frazier of the History and Politics depart- ment introduced a practicum aimed at registra tion, voter education, and turnout. This drive, other wise known as "Meredith Votes," is a campaign spe cific to Meredith’s campus, and hopes to become a model for other campuses across the nation. In order to make sure that our voice counts, the ten students in the campaign are calling all Angels to regis ter. We wholeheartedly believe that all of you are up to the challenge, and we have already started regis tering faculty and staff. We'll soon begin to canvass on-campus students and contact commuters by e- mail or phone. The cam paign hopes that everyone will "vow to vote!" Meredith Votes will try to make the registration process as easy as possible. Look for registration tables all over campus: you can find them in Johnson Hall, Belk Dining Hall, the library, Joyner Hall, and Cate Center. Out-of-state and absentee forms will be readily available as well, so no excuses this election year! Once you fill out a form, simply drop the form in the boxes, and no postage is necessary. Meredith Votes will send the forms to the Board of Elections for you. If you have any questions about registration or voting in North Carolina or another state, contact us at mered- ithvotes@meredith.edu. The process is incredibly convenient, so we hope that all of you will take action. Another goal of the cam paign is to educate Meredith students about candidates and issues in this year's election. The campaign is nonpartisan, therefore the information that we provide will be nonpartisan as well. Look for further articles in the Herald about candi dates, and opportunities to hear from the candidates themselves. This election has often been referred to as one of the most important elections in our history. So tell us: are YOU up to the challenge? Vow to vote!
