Page 4 September 1, lOM CAMPUS FEATURES Diversity Among The New Freshman Class JAYE ANNA MIZE Staff Writer As many of you have noticed, the freshman class is abnormally large this year. With 399 freshmen, as indicated by Danny Green, Associate Vice President for Enrollment, this is the largest enrollment Meredith College has ever seen. Did you also know that this is the most diverse group of freshman Meredith College has ever admitted? The class of 2008 came to our beautifiii campus from over 21 states in the U.S.. ranging from states such as Colorado, New York, and Texas. Although diversity is not new at Meredith, how will the more diversified fresh men class affect Meredith College in years to come? According to Carol Kercheval in the admissions office, one of President Hartford’s main initiatives is to broaden Meredith's diver sity on campus and in our community. By doing so, Meredith students are pre pared for a more diverse and accepting ftiture. The Meredith community has already seen the spread of diversity beginning across campus. The new general education require ment CORE for example, a class which teaches students about other cultures, allows them to gain an understand ing of different ethnic groups. Other examples can be found in student organiza tions such as Spectrum and Sister to Sister. This year, along with a new freshman class comes a new diversity calendar. This calendar is provided to gather Meredith as a com munity in order to create cultural awareness. Events include everything from movies, to Meredith Alumnae and other influen tial speakers, to marches and workshops dealing with specific diversity awareness, A more diverse freshman class is to be expected in years to come at Meredith College. As the college diversifies, students gain beneficial acceptance toward vast cultural backgrounds, becoming more aware and successful in the fiiture. omcm TRAINING 2004 Officer Training Workshops PLEASE PLAN ON ATTENDING ONE OF THESE DATES: Wednesday, September 1 6:00-7:00pm General Session, Oak Room 7:00-8:00pm Officer Workshops, Wainwright Suite Thursday.
