SdfSemoe Registration StatkMis Set

It is confusing, it is
annoying, it is long, and
it’s meticulous:
It is possible that you
guessed it might be home
work from professors, but
that is not it.
It is the voter registra
tion form - and it is a nec
essary feature of register
ing to vote.
When you look at the
plain white form, you'll
most likely think to your
self that you would rather
waste the five minutes it
takes to fill this thing out
talking online or watching
television - who knows,
maybe even doing home
work. You know that the
government already has
all of this information and
you wonder to yourself
why you would bother
wasting more time on
them.
This otherwise boring
and tedious form is an
essential part of the voting
process. This form gives
you power to decide the
future and it represents
your right to voice your
opinions. Therefore, it's
quite possibly one of the
most important forms
you’ll ever fill out - and
here’s how.
SELFSERVICE
REGISTRATION SITES
The Meredith Votes!
campaign is urging all
Angels to grab one of the
forms you can find all
over campus and fill one
out as soon as you can.
We now have self service
registration stations set up
in Johnson Hall, Cate
Center, Campbell Library
and one in each end of
Belk Dining Hall. All you
have to do is fill out a reg
istration form and drop in
the red, white and blue
Box. Meredith Votes! will
mail it to the County
Board of Elections in the
county where you register.
You can go online to
register, but be aware that
rH
VOTES
if you decide to register
online, it will require you
to print the form out and
submit it via snail mail.
You will need to find the
address of your county
board of elections and
buy a stamp. Why go to
all of that trouble when
Meredith Votes will send
it in for you!
There will be a couple
of opportunities to regis
ter at campus events in the
following weeks. The next
opportunity will be at
Residence Life’s DJ
Dance Party in Belk
Dining Hall this Friday
night, September 10.
OUT OF
STATE STUDENTS
The forms at the self-
service registration sites
are good for registering
anywhere in North
Carolina. If you want to
register in another state,
contact Meredith Votes via
email
(meredithvotes@mered-
ith.edu) and Paige
Walston, who is coordinat
ing out of state registra
tion, will get in touch with
you.
VOW TO VOTE
While you are register
ing to vote, fill out a Vow
to Vote card. Promise to
vote and briefly recount
the reasons that you think
it's important to cast your
vote on election day. We'll
send the card back to you
right before the election to
remind you of why YOU
said it was important to
vote.
If you are registered,
and if you live out of state
or don't call Wake County
your home, you can still
vote. Absentee forms will
be available at the self
service registration sites
soon. If you prefer to vote
in your home precinct,
there is one other option.
One-stop voting, or voting
at designated locations
prior to Election Day, will
begin on Thursday,
October 14 and will end
on Saturday, October 30.
Motivate yourself to fill
out the registration form,
if you' have not already.
The more our voices are
heard, the more impact we
can have.
The forms are available
to you, and there will be
several opportunities to
g6f -to know candidates
and educate yourself. So
tell us - are you [still] up
to the challenge?

taken effect that only require
"substantially equal" cours*
es. As long as same sex pub
lic schools are an option and
not a requirement, then there
probably will not be wide
spread outrage.
Students in the public
school system will benefit
from the option of same sex
education which has been
available to students in pri
vate education for decades.
They will also provide more
insight into the different
ways boy and girls learn.
This could also benefit coed
public schools in the future,
by providing different teach
ing styles to accommodate
both sexes.
Private institutions like
Meredith were built to
accommodate the way that
women learn. It creates an
academic community that
feels comfortable for female
students. Studies show that
adolescent and younger boys
offer distractions in class
rooms and suggest that this
does not change much with
age. Young women at
Meredith do not experience
the distractions associated
with boys in the classroom.
Students can take gender
stereotyped science and math
classes without feeling inad
equate or overpowered.
Students are not subjected to
a male dominated classroom
discussion. This helps young
women to feel more comfort
able and confident.
