Kim Gandy addresses Meredith community
TIFFANY STOKES
Staff Writer
On Monday, October 11,
K-im Gandy participat
ed in daylong events of
speeches, interviews, and
symposiums that addressed
the issues surrounding the
women of today. Gandy is
a nationally known long
time advocate and activ
ist for women’s rights, and
she is also the president of
the National Organization
for Women (NOW). In her
speeches, Gandy concen
trated on particular issues
concerning women; equity,
civic engagement, and vot
ing to change the current
administration in the White
House.
During her public
presentation, Gandy made
comments on the women’s
movement, how far it has
progressed, and how much
farther it needs to go. She
explained that there have
been gradual changes in
societal norms, and women
have been given the option
to move beyond expected
roles, but there are still a lot
of oppressive views, and
the movement still has a
long way to go. She also
urged students and faculty
to vote on November 2,
moreso to vote for a change

in administration. Shestated
in a personal interview, “If
John Kerry is elected, it is
still going to be a long hard
road ahead. I think that we
will stop regressing, which
is what we’ve been doing
under the current adminis
tration [President George W.
Bush], how quickly we start
moving forward depends on
the issue.” Also during her
presentation, bulletins and
flyers were passed out that
listed reasons, in regards
to the women’s movement.
