Meredith College is join
ing much of the rest of the
world in providing relief to
the victims of the December
26, 2004 tsunami in Asia.
There have been 131,053
confirmed deaths and over
100,000 missing. The total
US dollar amount that the
world has pledged is over
$5 billion and about $1.6
billion in private donations.

Meredith College will con
tribute to that total by raising
funds for Save the Children, a
renowned charity since 1932.
Save the Children is cur
rently working in Indonesia
and coastal areas of India
and Sri Lanka. Relief ef
forts include but are not
limited to: providing shel
ter and other protection
services, reuniting children
with family members, and
organizing activities to pro
vide a sense of normalcy.
Meredith has also cre
ated “Sustaining the Tide of
Hope”, a 10 member team
lead by Campus Minister
Sam Carothers. Its pur
pose is to help coordinate
immediate and long-term
relief efforts of Meredith
College. The student mem
bers are: Elizabeth Loftis,
Lauren Byrd, and Rebekah
Meek. Staff members are:
Nikki Curliss, Kristi Eaves-
McLennan, and Hillary Al
len. Faculty members are:
Betty Webb, Gail Kenyon,
and Bill Landis. John Rose
is the consultant for the team.
“Sustaining the Tide of
Hope” plans to create a web
site that provides news and
information pertaining to the
tsunami relief ftindraising,
education, and and outreach
efforts entitled “Meredith
Responds”. Possibilities
that have been suggested to
provide relief include help
ing to rebuild a school and
buying a fishing boat for
one of the affected villages.

send all Meredith College
community contributions to
Save the Children. Another
option is making a check

Tsunami Relief Fund or
