Page 4 January 19,2005 CAMPUS FEATURES Meredith Observes Hate Crimes Awareness Week January 17-21 is Hate Crimes Awareness Week at Meredith College. The theme for the week is “Social Justice for All.” Co-sponsored by the SGA Diversity Committee, the Diversity Council, and the Association of Cultural Awareness, events scheduled for the week include: Monday, 1/17 - The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial March at 10 a.m., beginning at the State Capitol. Tuesday, 1/18 - The Academy Award-nominated documentary “Shadow oi Hate” will be shown in the Cate Center (second floor) at 6 p.m. The documen tary explores prejudice and violence in the United States against ethnic groups and women. A discussion will follow the viewing. Wednesday, 1/19 - There will be a Martin Luther King, Jr. worship service at 10 a. m. in Jones Chapel. Featured speaker will be Dr. E. B. Palmer, co- founder of the African American Cultural Complex, located on Sunnybrook Road in Raleigh, NC. Thursday, 1/20 - Writer Alice Hom will give a lecture in Belk Dining Hall at 7 p.m. Hom is noted for lecturing on such topics as homophobia, racism, and sexism. The lecture is free and open to the public. Friday, 1/21 - Alice Hom will host a Community Building Student Forum at 10 a.m. in Kresge Auditorium. This event is for Meredith students only. Hate Crimes Awareness Week will fulfill the LeaderShape Vision of Cheryl Stanley. Her vision is to have an ideal society where there is acknowledgment, respect and acceptance of all people regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or lifestyles and the differences between everyone will be celebrated.
