The Re lay for Life is the signature event for the American Can cer Society. Teams are formed months in advance for this event in order to raise money for the 24-hour walk. The relay it self consists of members from each team taking turns walking around the track for 24 hours, conveying the mot to, “cancer never sleeps.” In addition to the walk, a lumi nary ceremony is held to re member those who lost their lives to cancer and to honor the survivors. Entertainment including choral and dance performances, karaoke, and games are also a part of the Relay for Life. The Relay for Life atNCSU became a reality when Chas- ta Hamilton and five other Park scholars decided that an on-campus relay would be beneficial to the campus and the community. For Hamil ton, the event is one that is very close to her heart. After losing her father at a young age, her mother was her pri mary provider. When Ham ilton was in the 2nd grade, her mother was diagnosed with stage-4 breast cancer. She lost her battle with the disease two and a half years later. Hamilton’s grandfather succimibed to lung cancer six years later. Because her life has been affected greatly by the dis ease, fighting cancer is something that Hamilton is very passionate about, and is the reason that she helped bring the Relay for Life to NCSU’s campus. A co-founder last year, Ham ilton has decided to take on the role of co-chair for this year’s relay saying, “Work ing on this project is a labor of love. Through every meet ing, every work session, my mother and grandfather are in my heart, and knowing that I am doing this for them keeps me going even in the most challenging times.” Hamilton said that last year’s event was a huge success, raising a total of $75,000. NCSU was also FOR LIFE awarded the “Most Outstand ing Campus Relay” award in eastern North Carolina for their first relay. While this year’s event is more cam pus-oriented, Meredith Col lege was asked to participate and some community high schools also have teams for the event. The theme for the 2nd an nual NCSU Relay for Life is “A Night in Hollywood: Lights, Camera, Cure.” Teams are encouraged to decorate their campsites to fit the theme. Setup begins at 3 p.m., with the survivors’ lap officially kicking off the relay at 6 p.m. The luminary ceremony will be held at 9:15 p.m. NCSU is starting a new tra dition with the relay this year photo courtesy of www.acs.org by hosting the NCSU Relay for Life Charity Ball. It will be held on April 1, from 8 p.m.-12 a.m. at the Convoca tion on Centeimial Campus. Tickets will be available to the general public on March 17, and are $15 a couple or $10 per individual. The NCSU Relay for Life is open to the public, and all Meredith College students are invited to attend and help out in any way possible.
