Our professors are educated, brilliant individuals, most of whom have doctorate degrees. Our parents and we pay a great deal of money to attend small classes with dedicated professors. Many of my professors are so passionate that they come to class armed only with a few sheets of paper and expound on their life’s work for one hour from memory. We do not have to suffer from teacher’s assistants grading our papers incorrectly because they have their own papers to write. We do not have to shout to be heard over two hundred other students in a politics class. Meredith students and professors get the opportunity to interact; to know one another by name and face. This intimate environment fosters great creativity and respect amongst classmates. The discussions held in my classes have been very meaningful to me. Even when we do not agree in my classes, we listen to each other. Sometimes all professors can do is referee our class discussions. This free exchange of ideas is the basis of a liberal education. It is also the intellectual foundation our great nation rests upon. Ladies, we are in college to leam new ideas, not to have our opinions confirmed. That is why we have CORE classes at Meredith, to expand our world view. If I make a fallacious claim in class, a classmate will tell me so. Our professors will also correct us if we are wrong. Meredith is in fact an institute of higher education. This means that your level of knowledge is to be elevated. If what we leam in class does not fit into our world view, it may still be true. If we do not learn different ways of seeing the world and its inhabitants, then we may as well be in vocational 1 of6 5/11/2005 1:12PM
