In response to the horrible
events that have taken in
Mississippi, Louisiana, Ala
bama and Florida because of
Hurricane Katrina, Meredith
College has put together a
task force to coordinate Mer
edith’s relief efforts.
The College’s task force,
called Category5, is an ex
tension of the Service Coun
cil. The group currently has
over 40 members, comprised
of students, faculty, staff and
alumnae. These members
are up for the challenge of
supporting projects that will
bring relief to people affect
ed by Hurricane Katrina.
Shannon Kelly, committee
leader for the Educational
Programs Committee, has
said that the task force has a
double role.
“Firstly, it initiates service
programming around its four
areas of focus—direct ser
vice, fimdraising, supply do
nations, and educational pro
grams. Secondly, it supports
all campus efforts in Katrina
relief by offering guidance,
resources, a~'Tid access to a
network of volunteers and by
maintaining a clearinghouse
of service events that reach
es the campus as a whole. It
is our mission to reduce re
dundancy of hurricane-relief
programs and to encourage
cross-organization coopera
tion,” said Shannon Kelly.
The task force, itself, is
planning its own projects to
help others, and supporting
the efforts of other oi^aniza-
tions on campus.
In addition to the on-cam-
pus organizations. Category
5 Task-Force is planning to
support those outside indi
viduals and organizations
that have been at the fore
front of relief work from the
beginning through a back
pack donation project.
The task'force is also
working on two other direct
service projects: break trips,
which will offer students the
opportunity to travel to plac
es hardest hit by the hurri
cane so that they may join in
relief work, and a communi-
ty-adoption project, through
which they will focus their
support on a specific group
of displaced hurricane vic
tims who have moved to Ra

leigh. In addition to direct
service projects, the Cat
egory 5 Task-force is in the
process of creating a panel
discussion of faculty and stu
dents to educate the campus
about how the hurricane and
its aftermath is seen through
the lens of different academ
ic disciplines and through
the eyes of those who are di
rectly effected by it.
It is clear that the college,
through the work of Cat-
egoryS Task-Force and other
campus organizations, is
planning to make a long-term
commitment to helping those
affected by the hurricane by
responding to the immedi
ate and long-term needs of
those impacted. For further
information, please direct
inquiries to the appropriate
subcommittees—Lara Smith
(smithlar@meredith.edu) for
direct service, Mary Rand
(randm@meredith.edu) for
fundraising, Jennifer Stur
ms (sturmsje@meredith.
edu) and Shannon Pascoe
(pascoesh@meredith.edu)
for donations, and Shannon
Kelly (kellysha@meredith.
edu) for educational pro
grams.
