CAMPUS NEWS October 26,2§i)5 Angels Win Meredith College Classic Twice is Nice fof LAUREN STANFIELD Staff Writer This past weekend the Angels Soccer Team hosted their annual Meredith College Classic. Cape Fear Community College, Agnes Scott College, and Salem College were all invited to the tournament which took place on Saturday and Sunday. The Angels first game of the tournament was on SaturdayagainstAgnes Scott. Meredith played Agnes Scott last year at the Scotties home field in Georgia. There, the Angels defeated the Scotties in the last couple of minutes of the game when Mailory Hancock scored the game winner off an assist fi’om Rebecca Thompson. This year once again it was a close battle between these two teams; Karen Taylor scored for the Angels in the first half, but the Scotties tied it up, forcing the two teams to go into overtime. The game went into sudden death overtime, in which there were 10 minutes of play allotted for two separate halves. The first 10 minutes it was a sure battle to score. but the game remained tied. In the second 10 minutes. Sophomore Jerica Moses sealed a victory for Meredith, as she headed the ball into the goal off a cross from Freshman Karen Taylor. The Angels won 2- 1. On Sunday, the girls took on Cape Fear Community College out of Wihnington for the championship game. Meredith was tired and sore from a long fought battle against Agnes Scott the day before, but the team knew they had another Classic Championship on the line. Sunday was also Senior Day for the Angels lone senior, Mallory Hancock, who was accompanied by her mother, Donna Hancock out on to the field for a pre game celebration in honor of Mallory’s four years on the team. The Angels came out strong against Cape Fear. They had many shots on goal, 15 alone in the first half, but the first one to go in was by Cape Fear who took an early lead of 0-1 over Meredith. However, Meredith didn’t stop shooting and soon their bad luck ran out. Karen Taylor tied up Uie game when she dished a comer kick off Sophomore Nicole Boucher into the far right comer of the goal. The game was tied at half-time l-l. During the second half, the Angels regrouped and took the Sea Devils by surprise, dishing out 4 more goals to win the game. Senior Mallory Hancock completed her last home game with two goals for herself. Junior Mai^ot Childs scored a goal from a comer kick, and Freshman Jackie Maloomian scored her first goal from more than 30 yards out. The Angels took the game 5-1, and won the Meredith College Classic Toumament making their record 12-4. Meredith plays their last regular season game this Wectaesday at Salem College. Afterwards, the Angels will then prepare for their trip to Portland, Maine November 4, in which they will compete in the National Independent Invitational Toumament. Taylor Special Series at Meredith Examines 30 Years of the Vietnamese-American Experience Meredith College will host “Rising from the Ashes: Thirty Years of the Vietnamese-American Experience,” October 28-30, in Jones Auditorium. The series features a photo exhibit on October 28-29 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and October 30 from noon - 8 p.m. The exhibit includes a collection of 50 photographs that describe the Vietnamese-American community through stages of adaptation, acculturation and growth, The photos are divided into chronological stages from 1975-1980, 1980-1990, 1990-2000 ind 2001-present. On Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. a community forum will be held to discuss Vietnamese and Montagnard refugees. Topics will include the history of the Metnam War, the exodus of Vietnamese refugees and the formation and growth of the Vietnamese-American community in North Carolina. Other events include showings of a 30-minute documentary film depicting the “fi-eedom journey” of the Vietnamese boat people. The documentary, which is subtitled in English, will be shown on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 30, the Vietaamese movie “Spirits” will be show and 6:15 p.m. The series, sponsored by Meredith College’s Core 100 Teaching Team, is presented by Boat People SOS. The series is fijnded by the North Carolina Humanities Council and the North Carolina Arts Council. All events in the series are fi^e and open to the public. The Raleigh native and St. David’s School gradu ate scored the Angels’ first goal Saturday against Agnes Scott, then set up Jerica Mo ses game-winning header with a comer kick in the 108th minute for a 2-1 vic tory in double overtime. Sunday, Meredith trailed Cape Fear Community Col lege 1-0 in the first half be fore Taylor tied it with her team-leading 10th goal of the season. That started a string of five straight Mer edith goals in a 5-1 victory in the title game of the Mer edith College Classic. Taylor was named the tour nament’s Most Outstanding Flayer. “She just continues to get better and better,” said Mere dith coach Paul Smith. “Our girls really battled during the overtimes against Agnes Scott and Karen and Jerica came up big for us.” Taylor leads the team with 10 goals and is among the Dili Independents leaders in goals and points (24). She won the award three weeks ago after scoring all five An gels goals in victories over Ferrum and Louisburg. Ju nior defender Margot Childs won the awardjast week.
