Angels Win Meredith College Classic Twice is Nice fof
LAUREN STANFIELD
Staff Writer
This past weekend the
Angels Soccer Team hosted
their annual Meredith
College Classic. Cape Fear
Community College, Agnes
Scott College, and Salem
College were all invited
to the tournament which
took place on Saturday and
Sunday.
The Angels first game
of the tournament was on
SaturdayagainstAgnes Scott.
Meredith played Agnes Scott
last year at the Scotties home
field in Georgia. There, the
Angels defeated the Scotties
in the last couple of minutes
of the game when Mailory
Hancock scored the game
winner off an assist fi’om
Rebecca Thompson. This
year once again it was a
close battle between these
two teams; Karen Taylor
scored for the Angels in the
first half, but the Scotties
tied it up, forcing the two
teams to go into overtime.
The game went into sudden
death overtime, in which
there were 10 minutes of
play allotted for two separate
halves. The first 10 minutes
it was a sure battle to score.
but the game remained
tied. In the second 10
minutes. Sophomore Jerica
Moses sealed a victory for
Meredith, as she headed
the ball into the goal off a
cross from Freshman Karen
Taylor. The Angels won 2-
1.
On Sunday, the girls took
on Cape Fear Community
College out of Wihnington
for the championship game.
Meredith was tired and sore
from a long fought battle
against Agnes Scott the day
before, but the team knew
they had another Classic
Championship on the line.
Sunday was also Senior
Day for the Angels lone
senior, Mallory Hancock,
who was accompanied by
her mother, Donna Hancock
out on to the field for a pre
game celebration in honor
of Mallory’s four years on
the team.
The Angels came out strong
against Cape Fear. They
had many shots on goal, 15
alone in the first half, but
the first one to go in was by
Cape Fear who took an early
lead of 0-1 over Meredith.
However, Meredith didn’t
stop shooting and soon
their bad luck ran out. Karen
Taylor tied up Uie game when
she dished a comer kick off
Sophomore Nicole Boucher
into the far right comer of the
goal. The game was tied at
half-time l-l.
During the second half, the
Angels regrouped and took
the Sea Devils by surprise,
dishing out 4 more goals to
win the game. Senior Mallory
Hancock completed her last
home game with two goals
for herself. Junior Mai^ot
Childs scored a goal from a
comer kick, and Freshman
Jackie Maloomian scored her
first goal from more than 30
yards out. The Angels took
the game 5-1, and won the
Meredith College Classic
Toumament making their
record 12-4.
Meredith plays their last
regular season game this
Wectaesday at Salem College.
Afterwards, the Angels will
then prepare for their trip to
Portland, Maine November
4, in which they will compete
in the National Independent
Invitational Toumament.
Congratulate your Meredith
Soccer Angels for a great
season so far and wish them
luck in Maine!
