EMELIA DUNSTON
Staff, Writer
On Tuesday, October
25th, the SGA Student Life
Committee sponsored the
first Student Life Forum
of the year in Belk Dining
Hall. The forum, conducted
by Jessica Conicelli, Chair
of the SGA Student Life
Committee, had a good turn
out with many members of
the Meredith Community,
including President
Hartford, coming to listen
and voice their opinions on
various topics. The issues
up for discussion that night
were the placement of Blue
Light Emergency Lights,
The Meredith Herald, and
condom distribution on
campus.
The first topic up for
discussion was the Blue
Lights that were going to be
placed on campus. These
emergency lights were given
as a gift fi-om the Parents
Fund. Currently, five of
the six lights that will be
brought to the campus have
already been designated to
be placed in certain areas,
and the committee wanted
suggestions on where the
sixth should be placed.
Two will be placed near the
parking lots near the dorms,
one will be placed near the
parking lots by the back
entrance, another one will
be placed in the commuter
parking lot and one more
will be placed behind the
gym on the Meredith Mile.
Some suggestions that
came up for the placement
of the sixth one included
near the amphitheater, on
the greenway path, near
the front of campus, on the
Meredith Mile on the street
near Jones Auditorium,
behind the Science and Math
Building walking towards
the commuter parking lot
and in the parking lot by the
alumnae house. The chair
said that the committee will
consider all the suggestions
given and decide on the
placement of the last one at
a later date.
Next item on the agenda
was the Meredith Herald.
Maria Santore, editor for the
Herald, stood up and spoke
on some of the difficulties
that the newspaper has faced
so far this semester, ftom
lack of writers to complaints
about the newspaper being
too biased. She reported
that the newspaper needs
more input and support
from the stodent body and
asked for any suggestions
on how the newspaper could
be better She brought
up the idea of possibly
putting the newspaper on
line. Many responded that
they would rather have the
paper in print because it’s
more accessible. Some
suggested that they get more
information from different
student organizations and
departments and advertise
some of the events going
on in Raleigh, like local
bands performing and art
exhibits. Maria said that she
would take the suggestion
into consideration and try to
make some improvements.
The last item on the agenda
was the issue of condom
distribution on campus. No
official decision has been
made on the issue and the
committee just wanted to
see how the students felt
about the issue, whether
they were for or against it.
The issue was brought to the
committee by the Feminist
Majority Leadership
Alliance (FMLA), which
was established on campus
recently. FMLA feh that
condoms should be made
available to students on
campus. They have said that
they are not trying to promote
sexual activity on campus;
instead they just want
women to protect themselves
and practice safe sex. The
condoms are a way for the
women here on campus to be
safe and responsible. A few
students at the forum felt that
condoms weren’t needed
here since you can get them
off campus at nearby stores.
They also didn't want them
in their faces promoting .sex
on campus. Others feh that
condoms should be made
available to students and
that there should also be
programs held on safe sex
to teach students how to
be safe. The main concern
from a lot of students was
where the money for the
condoms was going to come
from. Many expressed that
they did not want the money
to come from their tuition or
have tuition increased to pay
for them. The discussion on
this topic lasted for almost an
hour before Jessica Concelli,
the chairperson, stepped in
and brought it to an end.
For anyone who was able
to attend the forum or not
able to attend the forum,
the Student Life Committee
will be conducting a survey
of student opinion regarding
the availability of condoms
on campus. The survey will
run for two weeks, and the
results will be announced
at the end of that period. It
is very important that the
Student Life Committee have
as much student feedback
as possible on this issue, so
please fill out the survey. If
you have any questions, feel
free to email JessicaConicelli
at conicell@meredith.edu.
Coffeehouse a Success

On Saturday October 29th, Brooks Wood Acoustic Trio
performed in 2nd Cate for the third coffeehouse of the
semester. The local band also performed at Meredith for
the End of Year Bash last spring.
Brooks, the lead singer, brought a little Halloween spirit
into the evening by wearing a wig while he performed.
Students enjoyed cheesecake, coffee, tea, and cookies. The
event was sponsored by CAB (Campus Activities Board)
and SAF (Student Activities Fee). The next and final
coffeehouse of the semester is Saturday November 19th.
