CAMPUS NEWS November SO, 2095 A Black and White Vandalism On Campus Affair EMELIA DUNSTON Staff Writer MEA’s White Iris Ball was held at the Embassy Suites in Cary Friday, November 11. This year’s theme for the ball, “Un Affaire Noire et Blanche; A Black and White Affair,” was cho sen to honor the nightlife in New Orleans, which as we all know, was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina ear lier this semester. As way to give back to that communi ty, MEA decided that a por tion of this year’s proceeds would go to the hurricane victims from New Orleans. This year’s co-chairs for the dance, Mary Elizabeth Shytle and Talley Rouse, worked to make this dance a success. As you walked in the ballroom, the room was filled with black and white. The tables were decorated in alternate colors with beauti ful centerpieces. On the left wall, there was a huge back ground that was also in black and white with musical notes scattered all over. On each side of the stage, there was a mime standing on top of a platform and every few min utes they would change po sitions. They were very en tertaining, and some people enjoyed them so much that they climbed on top of the platform and started dancing with them. The music for the night was provided by the Phase Band. They provided a imique blend of music that kept people tapping their feet and the dance floor packed all night long. They played everything from “Dancin’ in the Street” to “1,2 Step.” They had something for ev eryone to enjoy. Their show was very energetic, and they kept the party going the night through. Raleigh Water Conservation MELINDA BOWLING Staff Writer The City of Raleigh is cur rently under a State 1 Man datory Water Conservation plan, with penalties of $50 for the first offense, and $500 for every following of fense. Strict measures are being taken to save as much water as possible. Some of which include not watering plants unless needed, and even so, not watering more than one inch per week, not adding water to any decora tive fountains, swiimning pools, or ponds unless it is to maintain aquatic life, and only washing vehicles at professional carwash estab lishments. No restaurants are to serve water unless it is by request, and lawn water ing has been limited to every other day. As of last week, almost 100 people have been fined for misuse of water, and many others have been given official warnings. All of the money collected from the fines will go to the Wake Coimty School System. It is rumored that the city may be forced to increase the mandate to a State 2 Conser vation Effort. If this hap pens, lawns will only be wa tered twice a week, first time offenders will be chained $1000, and repeat offenders will have their water cut off entirely. If the decision to change to a State 2 is made, it will be the first time it has been issued. For more in formation on conservation efforts, and ideas of how to conserve, visit the City of Raleigh website at www.ra- leighnc.gov. SARAH OWEN Contributing W'riter All who come to Meredith know the routine: we dress up, we sit in Jones and we listen to a description of honor and integrity, then we make a pledge to abide by the honor code and go outside to light candles together. What, exactly, are these qualities that we strive so hard to maintain at Meredith? Ac cording to the fourth edition of the American Heritage Dictionary, integrity can be defined as, “steadfast adher ence to strict moral or ethi cal code;” whereas honor is listed as, “principled up rightness of character; per sonal integrity.” These two characteristics, among many others, are not only desirable of Meredith women, they are expected. Since the academic year has commenced, the stan dards of honor and integrity have been forgotten by some. There has been a stream of incidents lately that have become increasingly more prominent; these incidents are acts of vandalism and will not be tolerated at Mer edith College. Examples of these incidents include, but are not limited to: stealing someone’s decorative pump kin and throwing it down the stairs, scribbling out the faces of Afiican-American women on a professor’s bulletin board, stealing postcards from a resident’s door, and writing offensive messages anonymously on residents' bulletin boards. Anyone who is caught doing these things will be taken to honor coun cil. As Meredith women, we ail have a duty to ourselves and our classmates to abide by the code that we set forth. The honor code was designed by students for students so that we may live and study in a peaceful and respectful enviroimient. If you know of anyone who is not living up to their responsibilities as a Meredith student by vandal izing other people’s prop erty, please remember your duties as well and have her turn herself in to the solici tors general. Please see be low for a copy of the state ment signed by all Meredith students. student a sense of personal honor and responsibility.
