Basketball Angels Busy Over Break
STEVE BARNES
Sports Information Director
While most Meredith stu
dents relaxed at home, vis
ited friends and family and
took advantage of some
home cooking, the Angels
basketball team was travel
ing. They found time to re
lax with family between trips
to Hawaii and Baltimore and
are back in the swing of play
ing twice or more a week
now that the new semester
has started.
Meredith dropped both
games in the Hoop and Surf
Classic in Honolulu in mid-
Dec, 75-48 to nationally
ranked Mary Washington
and 76-73 to Pacific (OR)
College. Jtmior guard Au
tumn Metzger hit 7-8 three
pointers against Pacific for
23 points and finished the
tournament with 37 points
on 13-24 from the field. She
was named the Association
of Division III Independents
Player of the Week for her
effort.
After two weeks off to en
joy the holidays, the Angels
came back to practice after
New Years to prepare for the
Villa Julie Classic in Balti
more Jan 7th and 8th. They
lost to Waynesboro (PA) Col
lege 67-55 before routing
Medgar Evers 78-43 to snap
a three game losing streak.
Nicole Hall scored 21 points
while Amira Issa grabbed 15
rebounds in the first game.
It was Laurie Mulqueeny’s
turn to crash the boards
in the second game as she
hauled down 15 rebounds.
Nicole Miller led four play
ers in double figures with 16
points.
The winning streak con
tinued Saturday with a 75-
48 trashing of Wilson (PA)
College. Mulqueeny again
grabbed 15 rebounds to go
along with 13 points. Issa
also had a double-double
with 11 points and 10 re
bounds.
“It was nice to play at
home for the first time since
November,” said Angles
coach David Zinn. “We had
a good crowd and picked
up the pressure defensively.
Our intensity on defense
has been better since Ha
waii. I’m proud of our team
for showing improvement
against a tough early sched
ule. It should prepare us for
the next six weeks.”
Hall leads Meredith (3-6)
with 19 points a game. Au
tumn Metzger is next at 10.4.
Issa leads the team with 8.6
rebounds per game while
Mulqueeny averages 8.2
Meredith is at home
Wednesday against Bennett
College at 7 p.m, then trav
el to Dandle, Va. to meet
Averett on Thursday night.
Spelman comes to Weather-
spoon Gym on Saturday for
a 2 p.m. game, followed by
the Peace game Monday at 7
p.m.

Revisits Sri Lanka

While most students spent their winter break with family
and Mends, a group from Meredith including 14 students,
two alumnae, four faculty/staff members and three commu
nity members, spent 13 days abroad mostly in Sri Lanka,
with a brief stop in London. The group learned not only
about the devastation that hit the area with the December
26, 2004 tsimami, but also about the history and culture of
Sri Lanka.
Look for full coverage of the trip in next Wednesday’s
January 25th, edition of the Meredith Herald.
