Students Express Opinions at Forum
MEGAN DONAHOE
I’reshman Member-at-Large
This past Tuesday, January
31, 2006. the Student Life
Committee held a forum to
discuss three campus-wide
issues; blue light security
poles, condom availability
update, and the possibility
of sororities on campus.
Shortly after the meet
ing started. Chief Strick
land updated the students
about the blue light security
poles. He announced that
four security poles would
be placed aroiuid campus
to be used in case of an
emergency. They will be
installed within two to four
weeks and their usage will
be assessed to determine if
more are needed through
out the campus.
The liccond issue ad
dressed was the availabil
ity of condoms. After the
survey results, 70.9 percent
of students who submitted
the survey were in favor of
having condoms on cam
pus. Jessica Conicelli, Stu
dent Life Committee chair,
read the proposal response
from Student Development
and condoms will be avail
able starting on February
22,2006 in the Health Cen
ter alongside information
about safe sex. The main
question brought up about
the condoms was “How
will they be funded?” It
was decided that condoms
would be funded by some
donations and some health
center funds. They will not
be funded by tuition. The
condoms will be available
in three places in the health
center starting on February
22, 2006.
The third issue was the
most controversial issue
discussed at the forum. The
forum was held to get more
information on whether or
not the student body is in
favor of having sororities
on campus. Many ques
tions about sororities were
raised and many different
opinions were shared. As
you may know, it is current
ly against campus policy to
have sororities at Meredith.
The SGA Executive Com
mittee met on Thursday
evening, February 2, and
decided to put the issue in
the hands of the students.
Students Who are interest
ed in forming sororities at
Meredith are encouraged to
research the issue further
Questions, comments, and
proposals may be submit
ted to the Student Govern
ment Association.
