Ac cording to statements made by Iraqi Police Lt. Col Falah al-Mohammedawi, Carroll was released on a street near an office of the Iraqi Islam ic Party. Reportedly, she walked into the party office carrying a letter in Arabic asking for help. From there, she was sent to party head quarters and handed over to fellow journalists and U.S. officials. In an interview with Baghdad TV, Carroll said, “I was treated well, but I don’t know why I was kid napped. They never hit me, never even threatened to hit Crackdown on Illegal Im NCAA Tournament Recap CHRISTY NASH Staff Writer The NCAA men’s basket ball champs were officially decided when the Florida Gators beat the UCLA Bru ins on Monday night 73-57. UCLA had defeated LSU on Saturday, April 1st, 59-45 and Florida beat Cinderella team George Mason 73-58, allowing the two somewhat unexpected teams to meet in the final on Monday night. UCLA led only once in Monday night’s game very early at 4-2. The rest of the game was all Florida. The Gators (33-6) never allowed UCLA (32-7) to make a run, though UCLA did cut a one time twenty point lead to twelve, late in the second half, but it was too little too late. Sophomore Joa- kim Noah led the way for the Florida Gators with 16 points, 9 rebounds, and an all-time tournament record six blocks. The tournament was not without its surprises, as is to be expected. Duke was the first number one seed to be knocked out of the tourna ment in the sweet sixteen, and the other three number one seeds, Villanova, Mem phis, and Connecticut all fell in the very next round. The final four consisted of four teams that likely no one had , picked to be there, with the possible exception of UCLA, who has a history of being a strong team. It was a disappointing run The Meredith College Aluinnae Association cordially invites you to attend “The Legacy Lives On” Senior Induction Reception & Ceremony honoring the Class of 2006 Monday, April 10, 2006 Hors d’oeuvres at seven o’clock Mae Grimmer Alumnae House Ceremony following in Jones Chapel We hope that you will join us for the unveiling of the Class Doll, a presentation of the Senior Gift, and a special ceremony inducting you into the Alumnae Association! The bill also suggests build ing two-layer fences along 700 miles of the US border with Mexico. The bill is now in the Senate for legislation. On Monday, the Senate Judi ciary Committee voted for a proposal that would increase border security and docu ment checks in workplace. It would also legalize almost 12 million immigrants in this country without proper documentation and provide almost 400,000 more work visas a year for companies to obtain future workers. At the same time, another bill is up for debate. This bill is sponsored by Majority Lead er Bill Frist, R-Tenn. It calls for tough civil and criminal penalties to employers who repeatedly employ illegal immigrants. In response to pending legislation, protests have appeared in many cities including Smithfield, NC, Los Angeles, Denver, and Northern Virginia. for the men of the ACC, when all four teams representing it fell out early on, by the third round. The women however, have made up for that. Three ACC teams remained in the Final four, Duke, Mary land and UNC. The fourth team was LSU. UNC took on Maryland and Maryland handed Carolina only their second loss of the season, 81-70. Carolina’s first loss also came from Maryland. Duke defeated LSU 64-45, making the championship game an all ACC match-up. Both the men’s and the women’s games have been very exciting and held some very unexpected outcomes and I, for one, will be sorry to see it end.
