^^PECIAL SECTION: CREATIVITY Profiles from the Day of Student Achievement AMBER CAUDLE Contributing Writer There were many great presentations showcasing the hard work and many hours of research done by the students on Achievement Day. So, for those of you who missed out, here are a few that 1 found particularly interesting: Candice Hailey Class of‘06 Major: contract major in pre-daiicc therapy Focus of research; the benefits of movement/dancc therapy for children with disabilities, more specifically visual impairment Most interesting thing learned: With the correct support, visually impaired children live next to normal lives, their only set backs are those imposed upon them. At such young ages all of the children Candice worked with were very accepting of one another. Post graduation plans: graduate school at UNC to pursue a Masters of Science in Rehab Counseling and Psychology "/ wish we could all view the world through the hearts of those children." Adrianne McKee Class of'06 Major: contract major in pre-dance therapy Focus of research: lo compare and contrast dance/movement therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy as treatment methods for women with eating disorders Most interesting thing learned: most other common forms of treatment for eating disorders perform research in a scientific and statistical method focusing on numbers and outcomes, whereas DMT (dance/movement therapy) has a large focus on the patient as an individual and the emotions that come across before, during, and after treatment Post graduation plans: graduate school to pursue certitica- tion in dance therapy “/ think DMT is an up and coming form of treatment for eating disorders. ” Caitlin Spicola Class of ‘07 Major: Political Scicnce Focus of research: the Blood Diamonds of Sierra Leone and arms transfers through diamond funding, more specifically, a brutal civil war within Sierra Leone being fought lo decide who will control the diamond mines Most interesting thing learned: Over 800,000 people were murdered, abducted, raped, or victims of amputation, and yet 90% of the population had never seen a diamond. Post graduation plans: graduate school to pursue a Masters degree in International Relations “/ wanted a topic that most people did not have any knowledge of. and a topic that needed to be discussed to raise awareness." CSA Behind the Scenes cont. didn’t exactly say my abstract was fabulous, but it did say congratulations. T received an email detailing the time and location of my presentation. So that’s il, right? Wrong! The next step is to figure out how to squeeze an entire semester’s worth of research into a fifteen minute presentation. Fifteen minutes sounds like a long lime until you realize just how much you have to say about your subject. For example, my presentation was titled “Joseph Schillinger's System of Musical Composition.” For my topic,^ had to make sure 1 covered everything in my abstract, which included a profile of my subject as well as a summary of his theories. 1 had to decide just how in depth I wanted to go. After hours of editing a PowerPoint presen tation, I finally whittled it down to exactly fifteen minutes, complete with relevant musical examples and a smattering of anccdotes. Showtime! On the Day of Student Achievement, 1 arrived early with my presentation CD and notecards, and had a back-up copy of the CD just in case the projector was experiencing any technical difficulties. Thankfully, everything was running smoothly. The moderator an nounced my name and topic, and away I went! I was surprised at how rewarding the whole experience turned out to be. There is an extra sense of accomplishment when you go beyond the research paper and present your research for an appreciative audience. I highly encourage everyone to participate in this school-wide event. See you next year! Creativity cont. dedicated to mapping out the stages and effects that children go through. The students and faculty in these buildings are creating new and imaginative ways to do things. Creativity is a term often reserved for those that only make art or music. Let us open our minds and to the creative efforts that people make in all aspects of life. Being creative may mean finding an easier way to keep the laundry separated, or solving a complex algebra equation using simple mathematics. Creativity has no defining characteristic; it simply means to do something with imagination and a little bit of flair!
