SPECIAL SECTION: CREATIVITY The Sawy Girl’s Guide to Surviving Classical Concerts Your roommate is giving a recital. You need to do a reflection paper for CORE 200. You made a New Year’s Resolution to be more cultured. There are many reasons we go to classical con certs. Going to a classical concert can be intimidating if you don’t know what to expect. What are you supposed to wear? What are you expected to know? What if you get bored? Here’s a guide that will arm you with everything you need to survive your next classical encounter. 6 Things You Need to Know: 1. Dress appropriately. For most concerts, casual-dressy attire is ok. Think Sunday best. 2. Know when to clap. If the performer is a soloist or small ensemble, clap as they walk onstage. If it’s a group that’s large enough to require a conduc tor, it is appropriate to clap as the group enters; just remember that the conductor gets her own applause. There is no clapping between movements. 3. Good posture helps you stay awake. Sit up straight in your chair. Slouching only leads to slinking down in your seat which leads to... you guessed it... sleep. 4. Silence is golden. Don’t forget to turn off your cell phones or any other device that could possibly make noise. Vibrate doesn’t count— the buzzing is audible. If there are children in your party, take them out if they become distracting. 5. Listen. It sounds simple, but this is the most important step. Instead of spacing out during the performance, try to really listen. You may be pleasantly surprised. 6. Read the program notes. Programs often come with more information than just what pieces will be performed. They include background information about the performer as well as the pieces. Music Terms Throw these "words into your post-concert discussion and you 'II come out looking like a pro. concerto—a work that includes both a soloist and an orchestra symphony—a longer orchestral work divided into movements movement—one of (usually) four sections of a symphony adagio— slow allegro—fast scherzo—a joke; usually it is a fast movement Aria—a long, lyrical song from an opera Hot Fun in the Summertime Ok, so creativity is most often expressed through the arts.
