President Hartford Takes Four-Month Break

President, Dr. Maureen
Hartford, has been on a
sabbatical the past couple
of months, college offi
cials said.
A sabbatical pro
vides a break from the
routine and often allows
professionals such as Dr.
Hartford the opportunity
to engage in professional
development opportuni
ties as well as to recharge
and reflect on issues.
Dr. Hartford
began her paid mini-sab
batical on Oct. 1- It will
conclude on Dec. 31. She
has spent this time host
ing family at her home
in Hilton Head, South
Carolina, and has trav
eled on business to places
such as Chicago, Dallas,
Houston, New York City,
and Washington, D.C. She
has also made occasional
trips back to Meredith's
campus.
While Dr. Hartford
has been gone, Allen
Page, interim vice presi
dent for academic affairs,
has been in charge of
administration. The four
vice presidents of the col
lege have been in charge
of day-to-day events.
Dr. Hartford has
devoted 7 V2 years as
Meredith's president. She
assumed this position on
July 1,1999. She is the
first female president of
Meredith College. She
served as vice president
for student affairs at the
University of Michigan
as well as a faculty
member of the Center
for the Study of Higher
and Post-Secondary
Education. She has
also served in senior

administrative positions
at Washington State
University, Case Western
Reserve, the University
of Arkansas, and the
University of Maine. She
attended UNC where
she received her BA in
Meredith's first
woman president

next semester.
French and
History and
her MA in
College Teaching. She
received her Doctorate
in higher educa
tion administration
from the University of
Arkansas. She is a native
of Charlotte. She has
been instrumental in
the implementation of
numerous programs at
the various universities
she has been a part of
and has received many
awards because of her
accomplishments.

Organization.
Being a mem
ber of the Meredith's
Society for Human
Resource Management
Organization not only
are you a member of one
of the top ten chapters
in the nation, but you
build on the skills and
knowledge that you are
learning and using today.
This chapter gives you
the opportunity to gain
leadership and busi
ness skills by offering
leadership roles, attend
ing educational meet
ings, participating in
site visits, and providing
you with access to the
national chapter where
you receive magazines,
internet access, and
newsletters. SHRM also
gives you the option to
partake in the monthly
Raleigh Wake Human
Resource Association,
where you will assemble
a network full of HR pro
fessionals. Other activi
ties include, but are not
limited to; participating
in the mentor program,
writing legislative letters.
Human Resource Games,
and studying for the
PHR. This organization
provides great opportu
nities that will shape and
mold your professional
skills and stay with you
forever.
To be a mem
ber of this organiza
tion you do not have to
be a Human Resource
major. You can become
a member by filling out
an application and pay
ing a $35 fee to become
part of the national
SHRM organization.
Doing these few simple
steps sends you down
a road that will help
design your professional
skills to enter the work
