Student emails, alumnae group meetings, student-athlete advisory committee updates and a Student Government forum demonstrated mass support for a logo - that retains the 'AngeT and helped to influence the later decision. The athletic pro gram's plan to join the USA South Conference in fall of 2007 requires the adoption of an official athletics logo. Director of Marketing and Communications Kristi Eaves-McLerman explained at the SGA forum Wednesday the need for a new more competitive logo that would "bring a lot of benefits to athletic teams." Students expressed strong opin ions against the possible mascot change during the forum. Only one stu dent offered a comment in support of a mascot change. Student Life Chair Lauren Thie mediated the heated discussion concerning the potential logo change. "We would be fiercer with a great record than with a differ ent name," one student said. Hartford later spoke, "We need some sort of symbol for ath letics that looks stron ger than the top of a Christmas tree." Another student addressed the issue of inadequate student sup port for Meredith College athletics, "You should go to the game to support the team, not the mas cot." A basketball player brought up a concern regarding the athletic facilities, "As a student athlete, I think we should define our athletic department, not our mascot." However, vehe ment student opposi tion was quelled with Hartford's decision Thursday to keep the 'Angel' or its elements in the college's new logo. "I trust that our work will result in an official logo that will meet the needs of our athletics teams, powerfully portray the Angel and inspire the pride of our entire commu nity," said Hartford. The mascot committee, made up of alumnae, a stu dent athlete, an SGA executive committee member, and vari ous staff and faculty from ath letics, marketing and student life departments, will continue -Ho progress in the creation of Angel of the Week: A Tribute toAlexander Lane Bonson By Kaitlin Briggs Staff Writer You were my best friend, Alexander Lane Bonson. 1 was sure from the moment we met that I would never be alone again. No one would pick on me anymore or call me names. You were my best friend and my protector. Last time 1 was here was for your funer al. It was a clear May afternoon. A slow warm breeze snuck up behind me. The sun was too bright and the birds were too loud. My suit itched and I was sweating so my glasses slowly slipped down my nose as I bowed my head in prayer and respect. The pastor's methodic voice pulled at my heart and my head. My father kept eying me as I slipped in and out of conscious- See BONSON, pg. 3
