Educating Women to Excel March 29,2007 Volume XWIUl, Issue 12 ON THE INSIDE: Advertisements,! p. 2 Lil’ Friends Spend Weekend at Meredith Letters to the Editor, p. 3 Editorial Page, p. 4 By Christy Nash Staff Writer Meredith College's campus was crawlirig with children from ages four to ten this weekend, as Meredith students came out in full force with their lil' friends in tow. Lil' Friends weekend is an oppor tunity for current Meredith students to invite any kids- brothers or sisters, babysitting charges, cousins or neighbors to spend the weekend with them at Meredith. Activities for "Camp Meredith" com menced promptly at 7 p.m. on Friday with plenty of snacks, glow in the dark necklaces, and a DJ playing ail the necessary dance music. 2'’*^ Cate was full of Meredith students and their Hi' friends who were all dancing the Electric Slide, the Cha Cha Slide, the Chicken Dance, and the Hokey Pokey. The DJ also produced hits from children's favorites including Hannah Montana and the Cheetah Girls. The dance party was capped off with some kara oke performed by some of the braver souls. The evening didn't end there, however. Students and lil' friends grabbed their wire hangers and headed to the field behind Gaddy Hamerick for a tjonfire complete with' 'Smores. Despite the late hour, kids were clearly wired and having a.wonderful time as they ran around the field with abundant energy. After the bonfire, many of the lil' friends went with their big friends to the various dorms on campus and settled in to watch movies and sleep over. Saturday started early, with a breakfast of fruit, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, pop tarts, breakfast bars, andjuiceat8:15. After breakfast, theentire group headed over to Weatherspoon to take in a preview of the Aqua Angels' upcoming show. The Aqua Angels provided some wonderful crowd pleas ing performances and the audience enjoyed it greatly. Following the performance. students and their lil' friends went with their respective groups where they participat ed in parachute games, went swimming, and created some beautiful arts and crafts, which included pine cone bird feed ers, picture frames, and plas tic k^ rings. Following these activities, everyone gathered in 2^*^ Cate once again and devoured pizza, breadsticks, wings, chips, crackers, and left over doughnuts. After lunch, everyone gathered in the courtyard in front of Belk dir\ing hall and enjoyed sherbet while partic ipating in such activities as tug-of-war, potato sack races, dizzy bat relays, and an inflat able obstacle course. As these activities concluded, lil' friends enjoyed their final moments with their big friends before returning to their respective homes. Everyone had a won derful time at Camp Meredith and, though it was exhaust ing, memories were formed that will never be forgotten. Meredith students with their lil' friends outside of the science and math building A Charming Evening By Laurel Benedum StaffWriter Meredith sophomores gathered in a transformed Belk dining hall Tuesday night for the class tradition called "Charming Evening." Students filed in to the dimly-lighted room to their respective tables adorned with candles and magnolias while soft classical music played by a string quartet filled the room. The ambience reflected impeccably the event's theme: "Moonlight and Magnolias." In front of each place setting sat a small black box sealed with a pink sheer ribbon containing a silver charm engraved with the school's initials and the sopho mores' graduation year. A meal consishng of lasagna or chick en, salad, and other various side items was served to each student, and then an elaborate cake for dessert. Following the meal, students were able to watch a slideshow comprised of the sophomores' pictures taken throughout their two years at Meredith with their friends. Then, after a few brief words from Holt Gooch and Ashley Lewis, Jean Jackson was intro duced to give a speech. Jackson discussed the back- SEE CHARM, PAGE 2.
