EDITORIAL \krch 29 2007 4 Where Are the Students? By EUse Moffitt Staff Writer For the past year that I've been involved in Residence Hall Association, I've seen more apathy than I ever imag ined from our student bocfy. Organizations on our campus put many hours of vrtjrk and effort into planning and car rying out events, yet the atten dance at such events continues to be at a disappoinhng low. I will agree that the well- known c^anizations on cam-^ pus have better turnouts; how ever, what does this say about the other organizations? Are th^ not doing enough adver- hsing to draw in crowds? Are their events riot fun or cre ative enough? Or do some stu dents have no desire to involve themselves with their campus? Maybe it is a combination of all three. I’ve seen how hard organizations work to put on events, and I can't help but feel like some people simply don't care. Many students complain about not knowing of events saying there is not enough advertis ing, but how can organizations advertise if no one steps up as publicity chair? And more importantly, how can they better advertise events when students dismiss fliers, don't read e-news, throw away mail reminders, and step on side walk chalk? Unfortunately, this apathy is not just limited to campus events and/or activities. There is an appalling lack of concern for leadership opportunities on campus. During elections this Spring Semester, many peo ple ran uncontested, myself included. Leadership positions are great ways to gain experience, meet other people, and strengthen your resume. But for some reason unknowm to me, there are still many open leadership positions to be filled. We need students to run events like Sizzlin' September Concerts, Comhuskin', and Little Friends Weekend. We are all strong, independent, and intelligent women capable of leadership. Let us exercise our capabili ties and become involved on campus instead of hoping that someone else will step up to the task. In the words of Gandhi, Be the change you want to see | in the world." , Now that I'm finished with my | rant I want to take a minute to ' praise my peers. When mes sages of hate were spread on our campus, students rushed to make t-shirts, posters, and ban ners in support of unity. They immediately spoke up about the importance of tolerance on our campus and were active in promoting peace and diversity. People paid attention to what was occurring on our campus. Apathy was nonexistent. If only our campus organiza tions, events, and activities received such a response.
