Women Always Ask For Directions
By: Whitney Wilson
Staff Writer
Last week, the
Meredith College com
munity made many new
additions with New
Student Orientation and
the start of classes. While
Meredith's campus is not
as big campuses of other
universities in the area,
students can get con
fused if they're freshmen,
trying to find all of their
classes on time. But do
not fear, new students.
There are many resources
to help you get around
campus and Raleigh.
When you're lost,
maps are always a
great place to start.
Conveniently enough,
there is a map of
Meredith's campus in
your Student Handbook/
planner. Maps are
also available in the
Registrar's Office in
Johnson Hall on the first
floor. Records Specialist
Debra Fairbrother says
that having maps in the
office reduces the num
ber of questions from
students.
In case a map
would confuse you
more, there are always
people around and
inside the buildings on
campus during the day.
Professors, students, and
members of the house
keeping or kitchen staff,
folks who have been
working or studying at
Meredith for a while—
enough to know his or
her way arotmd—will
be glad to direct you..
Not only would they be
able to give you specific
directions, they might
also offer to escort you to
your destination.
What if you get lost
in the middle of the
night? You don't have a
map, the buildings are
locked, and no one is
in sight to help you. In
flus case, you should call
campus police at 919-760-
8888. A campus police
officer is on duty 24
hours a day.
Another, often forgot
ten resource is your big
sis. Regardless of wheth
er you her or not, she is a
readily accessible person
to help you in your tran
sition to Meredith. She
can give you directions
and also give advice
based on her experience
when she started college.
Junior Erin Simpson says
that becoming familiar
with the buildings that
she would be going to
for classes and meetings
before the scheduled
time was helpful when
she was a freshman.
To the rest of the
Meredith community,
remember our new stu
dents in these first few
weeks of classes. If you
are in a hurry to get to
a class or a meeting, but
you see someone look
ing hopelessly around
for a helpful glance from
a passerby, try to empa
thize with her. Meredith
needs to continue to be a
commvmity that embrac
es all people, and simple
gestures like helping a
new student find her
way around make a dif
ference.
Lauren Philbeck, for
example, transferred to
Meredith last year and
her experience with the
students made her feel
a part of the Meredith
community. She said,
"Last year's Comhuskin'
was literally one of the
best experiences of my
life. Since I never lived
on campus it was hard to
know what was going on
around campus and to
get to know people. Now
I know so many people
and that feels good when
I'm walking arovmd
campus [and] going to
classes."
So, remember new
Meredith women, there
is not a stupid question.
Don't be embarrassed to
ask for help. And isn't
it true that women are
known for asking for
directions?
