Interviews Provide Insight Into the
Importance of Alumnae and Giving Back
Chelsea McGlaughlin

What is Meredith
spirit? Hilary Allen, a
recent Meredith gradu
ate and the current
director of the alumnae
association, says, "When
I think of the spirit of a
Meredith woman, many
adjectives come to mind;
determined, fair, honest,
kind, perceptive, gener
ous, smart, hardworking,
strong in will, mind and
heart." Furthermore,
the Meredith spirit tran
scends years: "While
[Meredith women] are
from different genera
tions and have different
experiences, they are
so much alike, and it is
the experience here that
allows them to share so
many similarities."
The Meredith spirit
is a unique aspect of
the College. Perhaps
this spirit creates such
unity and pride among
alumnae and encour
ages them to give back to
the institution that gave
them so much. While
many alumnae do give to
Meredith, the opportuni
ty is available for current
students as well. Jane
Mitchell, the director of
The Meredith Fund, says,
"All current students are
able to make a gift to
the campus. Seniors cur
rently give their gift to
d\e Meredith Fund. The
senior gift campaign is
a great way to get stu
dents involved in sup
porting the campus. I
am hopeful that it helps
them realize the impor
tance of giving back at
an early age. Every gift,
regardless of size, is so
critical to the success of
Meredith."
According to the web
site http://www.meredith.
edu/giving/default.htm,
"The Meredith Fund is
the annual unrestricted
fund of the College that
provides Meredith with
immediate funds to
address pressing needs
on campus. It has the
power to positively affect
every student, faculty
and staff member while
also affecting the com
munity. Thanks to many
loyal alvunnae, par
ents and friends of the
College, we surpassed
our goal of $720,000 in
The Meredith Fund. We
had an alumnae giv
ing participation rate of
22.7%." Allen says that
contributing to Meredith
is important for the suc
cess of Meredith: "As
