Okay, if you're a regu
lar reader, you might
have noticed a theme
going on in the land of
Star Tech. In the last six
issues (including this
one). I've written about
a digital camera, digital
photo frames and now
this—online photo/media
sharing. What's up with
that? Well, I really don't
have an excuse for myself
... except that I really
love photography and
digital goods in general.
Hey, ifs a good enough
reason for me!
Here you'll find a
small overview of the
(vast) land of photo shar
ing sites—some you've
probably heard of and
some you probably
haven't. The sheer num
ber of photo-sharing sites
means lots of competi
tion among the compa
nies—and therefore lots
of good deals for you, the
consumer. Happy online

Picnik.com
Picnik's specialty is
photo editing. Users
can perform simple one-
touch edits or can opt for
advanced controls to get
the perfect picture. Add
special effects, fun frames
and an array of fonts
and shapes to photos.
Perhaps best of all, Picnik
works with your photos
wherever they're stored,
so no uploading is neces
sary. This means you can
edit photos right from
your Facebook, Myspace,
Flickr, Photobucket, or
Picasa account; you can
also edit right from your
computer.
Snapfish.com
Snapfish is my per
sonal online sharing
site. Although I haven't
tried any of the other
listed sites, Snapfish is
a definite winner in my
book. Snapfish offers
really good deals (9 cent
prints), has frequent sales
and has a vast selection
of fun photo gifts from
the inexpensive to the
spendy. Custom posters,
keychains, photo books,
cards, mousepads, mugSy
t-shirts, stickers, coasters,
calendars, magnets, jew
elry and so much more
are just a few clicks away.

Myphotopipe.com
Myphotopipe adver
tises itself as a no-fluff,
serious photography
kind of site. Unlike
Snapfish, you won't find
mugs or other custom
photo gifts; instead, they
"make 5-star quality
photographic prints from
your digital images."
They offer such finer
ies as panoramic prints,
folio prints, multi-photo
prints, proof books, can
vas prints, photo books
and calendars, not to
mention framing and
mounting services. Paper
selections include matte,
glossy and pearlescent
in a wide range of sizes.
Yes, prices are quite a
bit more expensive than
they are at many other
photo sites, but I expect
the print quality to be
superior.
Motionbox.com
Motionbox isn't exact
ly a photo sharing site,
but its main principles
are similar. Instead of
photo sharing, it offers
free video sharing and
editing. Members can
upload and share up to
300mb of home video.
Premium members get
unlimited storage, shar
ing, downloads and a
high-definition player
for a fee. In addition to
the video hosting service,
Motionbox allows users
to create a hand-held ver
sion of their videos with
a pocket-sized flipbook
for about $8.- Pretty cool!
