New Bathtub Ring Members

The senior class
of 2008 Bathtub Ring
(BTR) has selected new
members from their Lil
Sis sophomore class of
2010. Tryout practices
were held March 16-18
in Jones Chapel, and the
final auditions were on
the night of March 19,
2008. "We had a great
turnout for auditions—
about 20 sophomores
tried out. They went
great; the Class of 2010 is
full of talented women,"
Shannon Walsh (Zeke)
said. "While we were
happy to see so many
wonderful singers come
out, it made our decision
even harder!"
After a five-hour night
of final auditions and fil
tering through so much
talent, BTR was able to
narrow it down to five
girls. The new members
are Sherri Alston (Otis),
Carol Boiter (Ralph),
Christina Emerson
(Rufus), Christin
Kubasko (Ethel Sue) and
Meghan Laurin (Zeke).
"It was tough, there was
a lot of talent," expressed
Jill Guyton (Rufus).
The new members
will be referred to as
Ring Around the Tub
(RATT) imtil BTR gradu
ates in May. "We choose
the new BTR members
based on both talent and
personality. However,
we watch the girls to see
how they interact, not
just with the audience
but also with each other,"
says Jill Palchinsky
(Ralph). "Some people
who didn't make the
group have great voices
and should continue to
pursue singing. A lot
of people stood out as
great solo performers
more than group per
formers," added Heather
Allen (Otis).
The name selection
process was based on
a personality match
between RATT and BTR.
For each name there are
characteristics that reflect
that person's role in the
group. "The names are
handed down by the
big sis BTR. Since I am
Rufus, after the new BTR
was chosen, I looked
at who could represent
Rufus the best," Guyton
explained.
The original BTR
,began with just three
women of the class of
1970. As in any blue
grass band there is a
woman's voice, Ethel
Sue, and a melody and
alto part, Ralph and Otis.
Zeke was later added as
an additional alto voice
and Rufus brings in more
melody and humor.
Being part of a 38
year old tradition is
something that all the
members have deeply
enjoyed. "I feel very
lucky and fortunate to
be a part of this wonder
ful even tradition! I love
being able to sing for my
class and HI' sis class,"
said Anna Edwards
(Ethel Sue). "I would
love to stay a part of this
group, as I love my BTR
girls so much; but it is
good to know the tradi
tion is going on to what
I believe is a great lil sis
group. I trust they will
stay true to this won
derful tradition," adds
Guyton.
"We all bring some
thing different to the
group, which really
keeps things interest
ing and brings a great
dynamic that our group
wouldn't have if we were
all the same," said Walsh.
She concluded by saying,
'TVhile I am extremely
sad that our time as BTR
is quickly coming to
an end, I feel confident
that the next generation
of Bathtub Ringers will
make us proud."
As the school year
comes to an end, BTR
is excited that they are
going to be replaced by
such great talent. "It is
definitely a bitter-sweet
feeling! I feel so much a
part of my class and the
BTR tradition and was
excited to choose the
RATT to pass on the tra
dition. But, I am sad to
leave such a great group
of girls. Two years have
gone by so quickly," said
Palchinsky.
RATT was first intro
duced at their Tea for
Two luncheon Saturday
March 29. They will
make their official debut
at the Spring Concert
with BTR in the Johnson
Hall Rotunda, May 3, at
6:00pm. BTR will make
an appearance at STUNT
on April 17, and their
final performance will
be on Class Day, where
RATT will also be sing
ing.
