Elise Moflfitt Contributing Writer The, Bahamas boast crystal blue water, white sandy beaches and numerous tropi cal activities, including Booze Cruises. During my Spring Break stay in Nassau, my friends and I decided to try the famous local Booze Cruise constantly adver tised everywhere we turned. We were a little wary at first, but by the end of our trip the Booze Cruise was one of the main highlights. The Booze Cruise is a four-hour cruise, which includes a tour, all-you- can-drink bar, snorkel- ing, lunch, visiting an island and dancing on the ride back. The cost of the cruise is only 45 dollarS“Very reason able for the amenities and experience. The boat picks up in three convenient locations: Cable Beach, downtown Nassau and the Atlantis hotel. The three loca tions allow all visitors to Nassau the chance to experience the cruise without having to pay an exorbitant amount of money on taxi fare. While the four hours of the cruise include pick ing up fellow booze cruisers, the captain of the boat gives a detailed tour of the waterway, explaining the history of Nassau, recent pur chases of million-dol- lar homes and small islands, trades that occur and other inter esting facte about the island. The boat itself was very clean and well- kept from the moment we boarded. The crew made sure that there was never any trash lit tering the two decks, and sea water was immediately mopped up to prevent any acci dents. Various trash- cans were provided and emptied regularly to minimize the amount of accumulation. The bathrooms were small but sanitary and were stocked with plenty of toilet paper. Seating consisted of benches and plastic chairs, and while there were not enough seats for every one on the top deck, there was available seat ing downstairs. Our first activity was snorkeling, and we were provided life jackets as well as snorkeling gear. We were allotted 45 minutes to snorkel and were given instruc tions on what to look for on the underwater reef. The cruise set up a line to indicate our snorkel ing limits, and a smaller boat was put on watch for possible predators, such as bull sharks or barracudas. Snorkeling was absolutely incred ible in the clear water, and I saw many indig enous sea creatures on the reef. To be able to snorkel and view the beautiful sea life in the Bahamas as part of a 45 dollar package I find hard to believe. If I had tried to go snorkel ing elsewhere in the Bahamas, I know would have paid a tremendous amount of money. After snorkeling, the cruise served us our Caribbean lunch, which consisted of barbeque ribs and chicken, peas and rice. We were also able to begin the booze part of our cruise. The bar served a variety of drinks, including my favorite, the Bahama Mama. Unlike other typical cruises that are all you can drink, this Booze Cruise did not hold back with the rum. Once or twice, I had to ask the crewmember not to put in as much rum, and she laughed, asking, "Oh, it's too much for you, is it?" Apparently, the Bahamian people like their rum! Overall, the drinks were flowing, and the Caribbean lunch hit the spot. Our next stop was an uninhabited but often visited island. The boat anchored in the water, and we waded up to the island. We were given 45 minutes to explore the island, lie out on the sand, or just sit and bask in the sunny weather. Crew mem bers were very helpful in pointing out sitting areas in the woodland, and they encouraged us to explore the rocks to see more sea life. Various locals came up the shore on their own boats and tried selling conch shells, starfish, cigars and other souve nirs. We were allowed to continue our boozing in the sun, and time at the beach was the per fect way to loosen up before we returned to Cable Beach. While we were on the beach, the crew cleared the upper deck for the dance party. The music started playing as soon as drinks were refilled and everyone was on-the top deck. The DJ announced a surprise limbo contest, inviting everyone to compete for a bottle of Dom Perignon cham pagne, definitely worth a little limbo. The crew held the pole and judged the contestants, good naturedly disqual ifying those of us who couldn't make it that low, myself included. Once the limbo contest was completed and a wirmer picked, the dancing began. While the music was geared more towards a younger crowd, people of all ages were on the dance floor. With a drink in one hand and the other in the air, we danced our hearts out the entire ride back to Cable Beach. There wasn't a more ideal way to end the Booze Cruise. Overall, the Booze Cruise was definitely one of the best experi ences of the Bahamas. We snorkeled, we ate, we boozed, we sun bathed, and we danced. The cruise exceeded all expectations, and I can guarantee there is no other activity that will provide as much fun as we had for the money we paid. I highly rec ommend the Booze Cruise to anyone visit ing Nassau and looking for an exciting tropical activity. As the locals say, "We be cruisin' and boozin' and boozin' and cruisin'!"
