Ptmio Courtesy ot John Kincheloe By Courtney Angers Staff Writer Meredith College seems to be in love with the phrase, “You just have to experience it!” We hear this in reference to Comhuskin’, Stunt, and even convocations. Un fortunately, this phrase keeps many students from attending activities around campus simply because they don’t know what the activities are all about. While we would like to keep the suspense in Comhuskin’, convoca tions should not be something that we remain puzzled about. To get the inside scoop on what these events really are, I spoke with John Kinch- eloe, the Chair of the Convocation Committee. First of ail, what is a convocation? Is it a graduation ceremony? A reli gious event? According to Kinche- loe, a convocation is simply a pres tigious event on campus where the entire Meredith campus is invited to hear a respecteS speaker or per-' former. Some of the events may be geared towards the arts while oth ers may focus on the environment ’ or politics. The events change from year to year, and Kincheloe, along with the Convocation Committee; tries to select speakers and events, that touch many different disci plines across campus and, therefore, reach out to the most people. Although it is okay to simply go and attend a convocation and lis ten to the speaker, this is not the best way to get the most out of the experience. In the words of Kinch eloe, in order to fully experience each convocation, it is, necessary to “Shake [the performers] hands. Ask them hard questions. Find out if they are guest-teaching a class and drop in. Put everything else on hold for a while, and connect with these people who have excelled in their fields.” In other words, surround yourself in the experience; don’t let it glide over you. While all of this sounds good, you may be asking yourself why. Why take time out of my already too busy day to go to these convoca tions? It is true that all Meredith stu dents are required to attend twelve convocations before graduation, but this is not the primary purpose See CONVOCATION, PAGE 5 ask gigi Dear Gigi, Recently I have noticed this one guy who has been creeping on my roommate and me. I don’t know how to handle the situation when he confesses his love for us even though we have never officially met him. My roommate and I constantly feel very annoyed and pressured to respond to his romantic advances. Is there any way we can talk to him without being too harsh? Or do we need to just ride it out? Sincerely, Crept On Dear Crept On, . , I’ve had my fair share of experience with creepers, but avoiding them is always tricky. By all means, you and your roommate should both tell this guy to back offi I wouldn’t worry about sounding harsh since you’ve never officially met him, but there are ways to be firm without being rude. How does he confess his love for ybu—does he call you, text you, stalk you online, or a combination of all three? For starters, you should both confront him through the main mode(s) of communication that he uses to talk to you. Then you should each tell him that you are not interested in him romantically. Politely but firmly emphasize the fact that his attention is excessive and unflattering, and that because he Is seriously annoying you, you are even less inclined to want to be friends with him, much less anything more. Finally, tell him that if he continues to bother you, you will have to report him to Campus Security (and if he refuses to back off or resorts to stalking you in person, make sure you carry but that threat by calling 919-760-8888).
