Meredith College is beginning the first phase of a $4.3 million investment for a new athletic field and track complex. The first phase comprises evaluation, facilities access, utilities, sports lighting, and the track and athletic field; it is ex pected to be completed by spring 2009. The complex is under works because Meredith’s current soccer field does not comply with the present minimum require ments for NCAA play. If the field does not-meet NCAA standards, then conference and tournaments may not be held at home. The Held will be located on the front lawn enclosed by Hillsborough and Faircloth Street. According to standards, soccer fields must be ar ranged in a North/South orientation. Therefore there is only a small quantity of vacant zones left on campus. Also, the chosen location offers various gains such as irrigation, visibility from the Main Campus Drive, and entry to present parking lots. Proof of Meredith Col lege s dedication to athletics was an integral part in the choice of the position of the upcoming complex. The fa cility may also provide many amenities for several other events such as graduation at the amphitheater. Throughout the late spring and summer of 2007, Meredith worked with tlie consulting company Brails- ford and Dunlavey to assess the College’s master sketch of the athletic facility. Representatives from Brailsford and Dunlavey visited to survey selections for the inno vative athletic sports ground. The blueprint to reposi tion the soccer field was then reviewed by the business and finance and executive committees of the Mer edith Board of Trustees. Afterwards, the entire board was introduced to the idea, and it was eventually ap proved. Those in charge of planning for the complex are Maureen Hartford, president; Jean Jackson, vice president for college programs; Bill Wade, vice presi dent for business and finance; Allen Page, vice presi dent for academic programs; Marie Chamblee, dean of the School of Education, Health and Human Sci ences; Melinda Campbell, professor of health and ex ercise and sports science; Jackie Myers, athletics di rector; Tom Sherry, director of operations; and Harty Cadman, assistant director of project and grounds. A new level of competition track and recreational field will be an element of the new field. As for the lighting, it will be versatile in allowing adjustment when needed according to the use. The entrance of the facility will be following the campus brick architecture. Seating will include a natural environment with grass covered seating like the amphitheater. After the main phase is complete, the plan includes restrooms, vendors, locker rooms, storage for track and field equipment, and even 248 count seating. The field will also be made of syn thetic grass for the use of athletics. Right now, look for the construction by the orange fence that sets an outline of the building site. ■ UPCOMING EVENTS Friday, Sept. 19 Tennis @ Meredith Invitational Tournament Cross Country @ Peace Pacers 5K Saturday, Sept. 20 Tennis @ Meredith Invitational Tournament Volleyball vs: Chris.
