nio OCTOBER 1,2008 i THE MEREDITH HERALD [ PAGE 7 AMPUS LIFE IS MEREDITH REALLY GOING GREEN? Photo courleiy vww.uitanreMwsS.com By Danielle Beck Staff Writer “Sustaining our Environment: Developing our Greenprint” is the campus theme this year at Meredith College. Meredith is spearheading a cam paign that will encourage other campuses, if they are not already on board, to become more environmentally friendly. With Meredith becoming so invest ed in the environment and trying to make significant changes to the campus to help the environment, how well do you think Meredith is doing so far this year? Every year the Meredith students spend hundreds of dollars on books for classes. Instead of buying heavy textbooks that are hundreds of pages long and are essentially contributing to the back problems that some students might have due to a heavy book bag, why not start investing in e-books? Instead of having to buy a work book, why can’t more professors get these online sources for us to use so we don’t waste paper? vhiy is Meredith still printing copies of the handbook to give out a copy of it to each student at the beginning of each year when it can just as easily give us a copy of it on a C.D. to use on our Meredith laptops or make it easier to use online? Student Activities and Leadership Development put their officer training manual online this year instead of handing out hundreds of copies of paper manuals. Yes, they did have a few paper manuals on hand, but they really did a good job of promoting using laptops at officer training. I know we cannot recycle everything, but there is a lot more we can recycle than not. Why is it that we do not use recycled copy paper? Why is it that when we have picnics on our campus, there are more of the big trash cans than there are recycling bins? On a brighter note, in Belk Dining Hall they have done away with using the trays, and all the paper cups and plates are recyclable. More and more of the faculty have gotten a lot better with using Blackboard instead of print ing everything out to hand to students. The professors have done a lot better with communicating on Facebook or through e-mail with students rather than wall papering the walls with fliers in every building. The Meredith community has gotten off to a good start in becoming a green campus, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Something the Meredith community should be aware of is that by trying to improve on these improvements, we have already begun to attain one of the Vision 2010 goals. This goal is to gain name recognition, and by becoming as green as we can possibly be, we can lead the way for other colleges in North Caro lina and throughout the United States and gain the recognition tliat we have always wanted. ■ SUPPORT ART LIKE YOU SUPPORT THE ATHLETICS! By Ashley Jones Contributing Writer On a very chilly Thursday morn ing in an eight o’clock class about global slavery throughout history, my professor mentioned rallying for support of the Avenging An gels of Meredith College after a rather exciting volleyball game. According to him, the game was so exciting because the athletes fed off of the crowd’s energy. In order for all games to be exciting, he and a classmate of mine mentioned that more people should come to the ath letic events and cheer for their fel low Angels. As I was heading to my car after class let out, I decided that my curr rent hoodie was no longer serving its purpose. I bought it two years ago when I was also two sizes smaller than I am currently. As I browsed the contents of the campus store, 1 noticed a lot of clothing items with the Avenging Angel logo. I shied away from those clothes and moved on to a different hoodie and pur chased it. Since the debate of changing the school’s mascot, I have always been a bit disturbed by the amount of support that many professors and students are trying to rally for the athletic department. Before I say anything else, let it be known that I do support the athletics, and I have several women whom I con sider friends on some of the teams. Not only that, but I support the very healthy hobby. Is that not what a sport is: a hobby? I’m afraid that, as senior in the arts, I have a difficult time grasping and taking seriously the complaints of those who say the athletics do not have enough support. Per haps not enough students go to the games, but I guarantee you that on any night, you will see many more Meredith students at any of the ath letic events than at any of the arts performances happening on cam pus. So many people are all about supporting those who do their best in their hobby of choice, but what about supporting those who are do ing their best in their chosen career field? I have a future in the arts; I will be graduating with a degree that says I may go out into the real world and share my passion—though it was once a hobby of mine in grade school—with others. Why not sup port me and many others like me who are on this career path? I may not be able to kick, dribble,' or throw a ball—not anymore, at least. However, I believe what I do deserves a professor’s (that is not in the arts) encouraging of his or her students to attend my performances. Please, come support me and let me show you what I may be doing with the rest of my life. Let me show all of my fellow students and all of the professors what Meredith College has done for me. By the way, I own a Meredith College Volleyball t-shirt. I support my Avenging Angels, and I have every intention to watch them domi nate over Peace this season. I just ask that they support me as well. ■
