PAGE 8 I THE MEREDITH HERALD | SEPTEMBER 12. 2008 O :ampus life ► f i-S-, i'.x MR. (TOO) NICE GUY Susie Potter Staff Writer Most of us have been on a date... or two...or three with this guy, the Mr. (Too) Nice Guy., I, unfortunate ly, have attracted several. In case you’re oqe of the lucky few who haven’t met Mr. (Too) Nice Guy, I’ll give you the rundown on what he’s like. He will be decently attrac tive but nothing too special, and this mediocrity will be evident in most other areas of his life. His job is nothing he’s particularly passion ate about, but he drudges away at it anyway. There will be no one activ ity or art that thrills him. In fact, all his devotion and fire will be aimed at you - but all too soon. Now, you might be thinking that this guy doesn’t sound so bad. Admittedly, there are worse breeds of men, some of whom 1 hope to in troduce to you in future articles so you can be wary of them as well. Mr. (Too) Nice Guy is not abusive, unkind, or ugly. He is just simply there— ready to adore you and hang on your every word. What’s wrong with that? A lot! Since the “love” he offers comes so quickly, it is evident that his feelings aren’t really for you. You could have been Ugly Bet ty or Princess Diana, and he would have felt the exact same way. He’s not really interested in your amaz ing writing ability, your favorite book, or what you like to do on the weekends. He just wants somebody - anybody. He’s lonely, empty, and thinks “love” will fulfill him. His emotions are shallow and immature. He’ll be heartbroken if you end things af^er a week, but don’t worry! After he’s finished his emo stint, he’ll quickly be out looking for the next victim - ahem -girlfnend. He’ll also continue the awful belief that women just don’t like nice guys. That is most defi nitely not true - it’s just that nice is just one of the many qualities we seek. There needs to be something more to a man than just this surface niceness which serves the twofold purpose of attracting women and as an excuse for why said women weren’t interested. In the never ending search for the perfect partner. I’ve come across every breed and variety of man and woman. Mr. (Too) Nice Guy is one of my least favorites. He might be sweet and doting, but when it comes down to it, he’s just plain spineless. He’ll care about nothing but who he thinks you are, and he’ll absolutely smother you with too much affec tion. He’s great for a short-lived, re bound relationship. Without doubt, if you do date him, your confidence will be built up. Be carefiil, howev er, as he’s likely to propose marriage or profess his undying love within a couple of weeks. In the long run, stay away from Mr. (Too) Nice Guy. Instead, find a nice guy with inter ests and a life outside of you. Pros to Dating Mr. (Too) Nice Guy: He’ll pay for absolutely ev erything, you’ll constantly hear how beautiful/smart/sweet/won derful you are, and he’ll always call you first. Cons to Dating Mr. (Too) Nice Guy: Smothering, devotion comes entirely too soon and can leave you feeling like there’s something wrong with YOUR emotions, no interests, whiny, needy.B I ibrary Essay Contest Carlyle Cannpbell Library and the Friends of the Library are co-sponsoring an Essay Contest.
