MARCH 11, 2009 I THE MEREDITH HERALD I PAGE 3 WHAT’S NEW IN RALEIGH? Aubrey Jones The highly anticipated BOYLAN BRIDGE BREWPUB opened last week on Boylan Avenue near downtown Raleigh, For the past six months construction and contracting have been in the works to open the pub that over looks the skyline of downtown Raleigh. The- outdoor seating covered by a pergola is great for an afternoon lunch with friends or a roman tic summer evening with a view of the city. ^ Perhaps the most unique thing about the Boylan Bridge Brewpub is that they brew ail of their own beers. You won't find the typical imports or domestics on tap here. They also serve sandwiches, appetizers and salads for lunch and dinner. Boylan Bridge Brewpub 201 South Boylan Avenue . SACS is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting educational institutions in the Southern states, including North Carolina. Meredith was first ac credited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1921. Member colleges and schools are re viewed by SACS every ten years. SACS is “in the news” at Meredith because the col lege is in the process of seeking reaffirmation of its ac creditation. This effort began in 2007-08, and Meredith is now preparing for reviews by evaluators that will take place in 2009-10. President Maureen Hartford is the chair of Meredith’s SACS Leadership Team, and Assistant, to the President for Special Projects Sue Kearney is serving as Lead ership Team vice chair and accreditation liaison. Many people across the campus are actively involved in this effort to demonstrate how well Meredith fulfills its mis-^ sion and pursues quality enhancement. Regional accreditation is very important to an insti tution’s reputation and well-being. An inability to gain SACS reaffirmation would have serious ramifications oh the College’s academic standing and could negative ly impact enrollment and financial support. Students are central to the reaffirmation process be cause so much emphasis is given to how well the college is fulfilling the educational goals it has established. Photo courtesy Kyra Young “Students are contributing to our body of evidence when they participate in surveys and other evaluations that provide supporting data used in SACS reports,” said Kearney. “They help when they participate in dis cussions related to irtiproving the student learning envi ronment or complete course evaluations, when they im prove student life through their leadership and service, when they achieve recognitions on campus and beyond and go on as alumnae to excel at what they choose to do.” When the visiting committee is on campus, the mem bers will definitely want to talk with students, as well as with faculty and staff, about the quality of the educa tional experience Meredith is providing. See SACS, PAGE 4 ask gigi Dear Gigi, One of my best friends just died. He had been sick for awhile, but it was still a shock. I have had several of my friends move away or drift away over the past year, and I just feel iike . everyone is ieavitig me. Next year \ am moving into the Meredith apartments with some good friends, but I just can't seem to focus on the good things. What should I do? Thanks, Lonely on an Island Dear Lonely, Wow, it sounds like this has been a really trying time for, you, and I am so sorry the loss of your friend.'When devastating events like thfs occur, sometimes it is best just to talk it out with someone: a friend, a professor that you trust or maybe even a counselor or therapist. One thing that you need to realize is that you are not alone. Everyone goes through a rough patch, and though it may seem like you will never get out of it, you need to remember is that there is always some'one on the Meredith campus (or beyond) willing to help you, talk with you and walk you through the steps to tackle your rough patch. I hope it all works out. —Gigi CALENDAR OF EVENTS Free STD Clinic 12-3pm, Health Ctr.
