During the 2008-09 academic

LEADERSHIP AT MEREDITH
Nataleigh Timberlake
Contributing Writer
If you haven’t yet noticed, spring is in the air, as well
as Experience Meredith. This time of the year gives me
the opportunity to think back on how thankful I am to
be involved in the Meredith community. We see it from
day one: Meredith has a foundation based on strength
ening women to be strong and effective leaders. This
statement doesn’t mean too much written in a pamphlet
that ’s handed out in one of the dozen or so seminars that
accepted students attend on preview weekend; however,
the longer I am a student here at Meredith, the more
important this statement is to me. Meredith College has
helped me to be more confident and to gain group work
skills that will prepare me for my future. Overall, being
a leader at Meredith College is vital to enjoying your
time here while also making current students wonderful
future leaders.
Being a leader in the Meredith community is an hon
or and a privilege that I view with great respect. Being
the class of 2011 president is a position that I never saw
myself filling a short while ago, but now, 1 wouldn’t
trade it for the world. Just a few friendly faces and a
few, simple, encouraging words led me to run for class
office and get involved on campus. Now, I am so grate
ful for the people who encouraged involvement and be
ing active in the Meredith community. Incoming stu
dents hear from the very beginning that getting involved
on campus is the secret to getting the most out of your
Meredith experience. This one statement couldn’t be
any truer.
Getting involved in Meredith’s various clubs and or
ganizations is not as hard as it may seem. Meredith Col
lege offers over 100 different clubs and organizations
to get involved in, ranging from class activities to reli
gious organizations. The best way to become an active
part of the Meredith community is to jump right in and
attend a meeting, e-mail the club president with ques
tions you may have or even visit the Office of Student
Activities and Leadership Development and find what
you’re most interested in. Cheiyl Jenkins, Director of
Student Activities, states, “Being involved on campus
in leadership roles or being members of organizations
is important because it gives students opportunities to
learn valuable skills that will be relevant in their future
careers and personal lives. A Meredith student needs to
be aware of her personal leadership style, learn how to
work in groups, and understand her connection to the
overall community.”
I can speak from personal experience that our class
loves to have new people join in on class meetings or
event committees; we always appreciate a fresh face to
offer up some new ideas. For example, this past year
has been packed with class events such as Comhuskin’,
Guardian Angel, Tea for Two, Charming Evening and
Class Day; each of these events has different co-chairs
and different people working to make them the best they
can be. 1 feel like Meredith offers a variety of activities
to choose from to get involved so that there is virtually
no way that a student couldn’t be involved with some
thing that goes on here.
There are various ways to become involved at Mer
edith College including, but not limited to, being a resi
dent assistant, a student advisor, a club officer, a student
assistant or a co-chair for an event. The best way to fig
ure out what interests you the most is by trial and error
and by investigating the various opportunities offered
here at Meredith. All in all, Meredith College has made
me a better, more effective leader, and 1 would encour
age all current students and future students to become
active in their education and be involved in the Mer
edith College community; it’s a decision they will not
regret. ■
