Junior midfielder Alex Calvert has proved herself to be an
Invaluable asset to the 2009 Meredith College soccer team. Cal
vert’s skill and persistence were enough to help Meredith come
out with a victory against both Shenandoah and Mary Baldwin
in the first week of October. In the match against Shenandoah,
Calvert scored 3 goals and had an assist. Her offensive tenacity
helped lead her to team to victory.
Calvert has been playing soccer since she was four years old..
Although it is challenging to be a college athlete, Calvert has im
mensely enjoyed her time on the Meredith College soccer squad.
Her most treasured memory at Meredith Is winning the confer
ence tournament last year.
In addition to playing soccer, Calvert is also a focused stu
dent. She is a business administration major with a marketing
minor, and school work is a very big part of her life.
Because of Calvert’s contributions to the team, Meredith is
well on their way to having a successful season. They have an
overall record of 7-2-1 and plan on defending their title as confer
ence toul-nament champs.
“I think Meredith soccer will finish as one of the top teams
-in our conference, and hopefully we will make it back to the
NCAA’s,” stated Calvert.

The Meredith Avenging Angels
Cross Country team competed In
the Great American Cross Country
Festival held In Wake Med Soc
cer Complex on Friday, October
2. The weather was a perfect,
autumnal day for a race. There
was a slight breeze in the air and
the temperature was in the mid
70s with.partly cloudy skies. The
ground was dry—a stage for opti
mal running performance.
Arch rival Peace College par
ticipated in the meet as well, being
the only other Division III school
present. Other local teams were
the NC State Club Cross Country
team and the official Wolfpack
Cross Country team. Other nearby
schools participating included
Campbell University, UNC Pem
broke, and East Carolina. Some

the race; including the University of
Miami, the University of Maryland,
and Georgia Tech.
Cross country team winners are
determined by individual placings:
the lower the score, the higherthe
ranking. Dominating the top 5
places, the University of Maryland
won the race: The overall winner
of the women’s race was Kristin
Reed of the University of Maryland,
with a time of 17:47. Georgia Tech
took second place, the University
of Maryland third and fourth; and
East Carolina took fifth place with
a time of 18:15.
Meredith ran very well, com
ing in a lucky 13th place, beating
Guilford College! The top runner
for Meredith College was Meghan
Beebe, with a time of 22:01. Com
ing in close, but not far behind
Beebe' was Katelyn Thacker with
a time of 23:05. Joyce McLeod
pulled in right behind Thacker,
bringing home a 23:13. Karen
Chung was on the coattails of
McLeod with a time of 23:37.
Closely following Chung were
several Avenging Angels: coming
In at 24:12 was Maggie CrifasI,
Katie Helms brought it home with a
time of 24:21, Lauren Habermehl
was right behind them with a time
of 24:22. Exactly ten seconds later,
came,Lauren McDonald. After
nearly a minute, Chelsea Best
climbed made it through the fin
ish line at 25:26. Sam Ramsdall
brought her game to an end at
26:22. Aleigha Page held up the
rear with a time of 27:1,9. Well
done MCXC!
The Running Angels will be
racing Saturday October 17 at
Guilford College for the Quaker
Invitational. After a two week race
break, the Angels should be well
rested enough to dominate this
race. If you can make it, come
down to Greensboro and cheer
on the cross country team. There
are only two regular races in the
season left, and then reglonals will
be held on the 14th of November.
