Green Tip of the Week courtesy of Laura FieKselman The cotton indiistiy clothes us at a huge cost to the environment. Pesticide and herbicides are used in astronomical lev els, as is water and land. In recent years, some cotton producers have switched to organic growing methods that provide a more earth friendly cotton product alternative. Meghan Grady, Staff Writer During the years in which most of us were born, fashionistas were sporting shoulder pads, leg warm ers, and big bouffant mullets. Remember business in the front, party in the back?! In the 90s, we were lacing up our Doc Martens and broadcasting trendy phrases like “That’s phat!” and of course the Clueless inspired “as if!” But, as the first decade in the 21st century comes to a close, could the word “green” just be a fad too? “Green,” it’s everywhere! We receive tons of catalogs in the mail from companies urging us to buy their “green” products. Is this just one big marketing propaganda? Are we trying to assert ourselves as “sophisticated” or “cultured” be cause we drive a green car, carry a natural cotton sack in which to bag our groceries, or sleep on organic linens? For those who simply want to gain a hip image by filling their shopping cart with “green” products, perhaps they should investigate what truly makes something eco-friendly. The folks at MSNBC recommend watch ing out for vague claims on the package. When you shop, make sure the product says “recycled” or “organic.” Don’t fall for the word “natural.’’Check for certifica tions such as Energy Star, USDA organic seal, and the Forest Stew ardship Logo. Be sure to do your research before you buy! Here are a few websites to get you started: greenerchoices.org, www.greenseal. org, and www.responsiblepurchas- ing.org. And certainly, if you have ques tions, ask! Ask the employees of the store what qualifies their products as eco-friendly. So let’s not make this another passing fad. Don’t just hop on the “green” bandwagon because it’s the “cool” thing to do, make it your goal to implement an eco-friendly lifestyle. With a little effort on our part, we can make a difference for generations to come! Saints beat Manning; Win First Superbowl Adrienne Bryant, Contributing Writer Well, it turns out Peyton Man ning isn’t Superman after all. Drew Brees and the Saints found a way to beat Manning sans kiyptonite, and they came away with the first ever Super Bowl victory for the New Orleans Saints franchise. The first quarter didn’t go to well for the Saints. They went four and out on their first drive, and the Colt’s responded with a 38 yard field goal from kicker. Matt Stover. The Colts scored again on their second possession when Manning and wide receiver Pierre Garcon connected for a 19 yard touchdown pass, ending the first quarter lead ing 10-0. The Saints showed a little life early in the second quarter, and they got their first points of the game with a 46 yard field goal by second year kicker, Garrett Hartley. New Orleans coach Sean Pa5don began the third quarter riskily (and successfully) with an onside kick that caught the Colts off guard, allowing the Saints first possession of the second half. Drew Brees then led the Saints down the field and threw a 16 yard touchdown pass to Pierre Thomas, bringing the score to 13-10. Payton Manning responded by completing 5 of 6 passes and getting into posi tion for running back Joseph Ad- dai to rush for a touchdown. The Colts regained the lead at 17-13. Then Saints kicker, Garrett Hart ley made a 47 yard field to bring the score to within one point. At the beginning of the fourth quarter the Colts threatened (and failed) to score again with a 51- yard field goal attempt by Stover. The Saints regained possession of the ball and scored a touchdown on a pass from Brees to Jeremy Shockey. Another gutsy call from Player of the Week Jillian Curtis, Staff Writer ^ ^Senior Brittany Cornelius is this issue’s Player of the j Week. Cornelius is a four year starter for the Meredith Avenging iVngels Basketball team. Her talents on the court, combined with her leadership skills have led her to become co-captain of the 2010 squad. Cornelius | plays guard and forward, and is currently ranked as the I 3rd all time leading scorer at Meredith. I “I have been playing organized basketball since I was ^ in the first grade. However, as the baby sister of three 1 older brothers, I am sure I started bouncing a basketball and throwing it into a basket as soon as I could walk,” stated Cornelius. In addition to basketball, Cornelius is also a veiy dedicated student. As a Business Administration Ma jor and a Math and Finance Minor, Cornelius is used to balancing her time between basketball and school work. She has managed to succeed at her time management admirably and plans on attending graduate school in the fall for a Masters in Accounting. Coach Sean Payton, the Saints decided to go for a two point conversion. After a challenge on the play, the Saints were winning 24-17. Peyton Manning, the king of fourth quarter comebacks, now took the field. Halfway down the field Manning threw an inter ception into the hands of Saints cornerback Tracy Porter who returned it 74 yards for a touch down. The New Orleans Saints defied all odds and beat the India napolis Colts 31-17 to win Super Bowl XLIV.
