Meredith’s New Mascot photo courtesy of Galley Jones Galley Jones, Staff Writer Meredith is a hive of bird activity this time of year. Ameri can Robins are beginning their mating dances, and the Eastern Bluebirds are spotted dipping after insects over the pond. The ever present Ganada Geese will soon be even more likely to chase you from the sidewalk as their goslings hatch. This year Meredith has had a very special visitor. A Red-tailed Hawk seems to have made its home on campus. According to theGornell Lab of Ornithology, the Red-tailed Hawk is one of the most common hawks in North America. It’s quite common to see them soaring over the highway, on the lookout for the small mammals that make up the majority of their diet. These large hawks tend to mate for life and can sometimes be seen hunting as a pair. They nest in high trees and raise one up to five hatchlings each year. If you have ever seen a movie in which a raptor (hawk or eagle) appeared on-screen, then you have most likely have heard the scream of a Red-tailed Hawk. No matter the species on the screen, the sound played is usually that of a Red-tail. The Red-tailed Hawk, mostly seen on campus, is a juve nile. Golor patterns vary widely in these species and not all of the birds have a red tail. The Mere dith Red-tailed has a light colored tail with dark barring (horizon tal stripes) and no dark bar on the underside of the wings which indicates that it has not yet fully matured. Young though it may be, the hawk is still a skilled preda tor. Many students have reported watching the bird take down one of the many squirrels on campus. It has been spotted on telephone poles, watching softball and has even been seen perched on dorm balconies. So next time a large bird swoops by, take a minute to appre ciate the stunning wildlife that can be found even in the middle of a city.
