Local Bands Move Beyond Local Appeal Regardless of your involve ment, the Triangle has one of the best music scenes iii the Southeast. With many fantastic music joints (the Brewery, Cats Cradle, and doz ens of small clubs, cafes, and bars), hundreds of bands come through the area annually. Even better than this, the Triangle has plenty of its own talented bands with genres ranging from bluegrass to rock to electronica. The following bands are part of this great mix—all local, talented musicians. Bowerbirds: Bowerbirds is a trio of musicians from Raleigh, NC that has been garnering local and national support (having just performed at SXSW). Composed of three locals that sing, play guitar, and dabble in accordion, Bow erbirds has toured in support of local legends The Mountain Goats. I suggest listening to “My Oldest Memory,” with lyrics as poetic as “And I dont know whose land were on. Is this an island that plots like a villain. Or an old ghost friend we dont believe in?” how can you not appreciate their talent. You can see Bowerbirds live April 9th at Cat’s Cradle. Amy Hruby I Was Totally Destroying It: This four man, one female band from Chapel Hill have been on the local music scene for a few years now (I first saw them in 2007), and they’ve slowly been gathering national and even a bit of inter national attention (Brazilian cell phone serviceprovider Vivo just used a IWTDI song in an ad cam paign). They have a good rock and indie sound, tempered with Rachel Hirsch’s (the one female’s) light vocals, a bit of brass, and some tin kering piano. I’d suggest listening to their single “Come Out, Come Out,” and their song “Teeth” from their most recent album. Horror Vacui (which literally means fear of empty space), for a taste of their current sound, and if you’d like to check out a bit of their history try “To Nomenclature” from their first album. A lyric: “And when I think about it, this is just nomenclature. I have a name for you, and you have a name for me.” You can see IWTDI live April 1st at The Pinhook in Dur ham or April 20th at The Reservoir in Carrboro. The Beast: The Beast is an entirely Ask Gigi |,Dear Gigi, I won’t tell you my class year, but I've been here at MereCo long enough and I still haven't’figured something out...WHERE ARE THE BOYS?!? Sincerely, Single and Searching Dear Single and Searching, There may not be much testosterone at Meredith, but never fear: that does not apply to all of Raleigh! Remember this rule of thumb: when there is a large co-.ed university across the street, there are fraternities full of eligible bachelors w'ith heaits to steal. Because fraternities project many different,!^ “personalities,” there are multiple varieties of guys to be found in them, so pick the one you click with. If you’re skeptical of all frat boys, you're not out ofluck; one need not w-alk farther than The Brickhouse sports bar^ across the street in the Royal Plaza, when a basketball game is playing, of perhaps down the strip that contains East V'illage, Katmandu, PB’s, and ■ The Farmhouse. Like fraternities, bars and restaurants also tend to attract different personality types so choose wisely! If all else fails, plan a stake out at Cook-Out between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00 am on Friday or . Saturday night and befriend cars full of college cuties - one of them mighf I just be your soul mate. Happy hunk-hunting! Yours truly •/; Gigi ST I Was Totally Destroying It, photo courtesy of Jason Arthurs, via the myspace.com/iwtdi different kind of band than the previous two. Deemed “hip-hop/ jazz/soul” on their myspace page (myspace.com/thebeastreality) and “cool, ambient hip-hop” in the News and Observer’s recent ar ticle “The Great Eight,” this sound has a unique, rhythmic, unstop pable danceable sound. Their song “Translation,” has Spanish-jazz undertones and their lyrics are tight and intelligent. This band is defi nitely going to make somethhig of themselves. You can see The Beast live April 9th at Local 506.
