Reimagining the fashion worid with Redress Raieigh eco-fashion show Press Release, Redress Raleigh Don't worry, What We 3 Wednesdays wiii be back next week, instead, go read the Letter from the Editor on the Opinion Page The second annual Redress Raleigh will highlight innovative concepts from local designers whose collections consider the human impact of fashion on our environment. Through the use of organic dyes and fabrics, unused scraps from fabric and home fur nishing stores, or decofistruction of existing clothing, 15 designers will unveil their interpretations of re inventing the fashion world at 7pm on April 17 at Flanders Art Galleiy in downtowTi Raleigh. Redress Raleigh is also the primary fundraiser for MorLove, a nonprofit organization that refash ions textiles for resale to support children in poverty with little means to lead an enriched life. Current projects include helping support a home for abandoned ba bies and young children in Uganda, a school in Madagascar, and local programs in the Raleigh, North Carolina area. Redress Raleigh is • co-produced by MorLove, Revamp, and Triangle Emerging Green Builders (EGB). Revamp is a line of re constructed vintage clothing by Durham designer Jamie Powell fo cused on creating classic wardrobe staples that incorporate vintage eco-friendly materials and produc tion processes. The Triangle EGB actively promotes the integration of sustainable “green” principles in the design and development of residential and commercial buildings through networking and educational events. The group is comprised mainly of students and young professionals who have a keen interest in green building but also includes those new to the Tri angle area and/or the field of green building. This year’s Redress Ra leigh Eco-fashion show will be held as part of Planet Earth Celebra tion, downtown Raleigh’s Earth Day celebration hosted by Burt’s Bees and the Museum of Natural Sciences. There will be a booth at the Green Bazaar from 11am - 5pm filled with merchandise for purchase and a sneak peek during the day’s festivities. A pre-Redress cocktail hour will be held at Tan- tra, next door to the show location, from 5:00 - 6:30pm. An after party to celebrate will start at 11pm at Isaac Hunter’s Oak City Tavern, 112 Fayetteville Street. Tickets for the evening show can be purchased opline - $25 for seats and $8 for standing (standing tickets will be $10 at the door on the day of the show). CFDA Fashion Awards Celebrate American Design Erin Etheridge, StafFWriter The American fashion in dustry was all abuzz on Wednesday, March 17, as prominent American fashion designer Diane von Fur- stenburg unveiled the honorees and nominees^or the 2010 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Fashion Awards. Furstenburg, who was recently elected to a third term as president of the CFDA, joined Nadja Swarovski of Swarovski crystal at a downtown New York studio to make the nominations for the CFDA Fashion Awards, often referred to by industry insiders as fashion’s version of the Oscars. According to the CFDA Web site, http://www.cfda.com, the pur pose of the CFDA Fashion Awards is “to recognize the outstanding contri butions made to American fashion ' by individuals from all areas of the industry and related arts.” Each year, CFDA members, along with a select group of fashion journalists, retailers, and stylists, nominate individuals or teams of designers for the coveted awards. The CFDA’s Web site indi cates that this year’s list of awards includes “design excellence in wom- enswear, menswear and accessories as well as extraordinary’ accomplish ments in journalism, creative vision and lifetime achievement.” The womenswear category is occupied^by fashion powerhouses Marc Jacobs, Donna Karen, and Al exander Wang. Meanwhile, Michael Bastian, Tom Ford, and David Nev ille and Marcus Wainwright (both representing the Rag & Bone label) received nominations in the mens wear category. Nominations for the design excellence in accessories category included Alexis Bittar, Marc Jacobs, and Lazaro Hernandez and Jack Mc- Collough, both of Proenza Schouler. Equally competitive and coveted are the awards for emerging talent in womenswear, menswear, and accessories given by Swarovski, who underwrites the CFDA Fashion Awards. This year’s nominees for wo menswear include Joseph Altuzarra, Prabal Gurung, and Jason Wu. Rich ard Chai, Patrik Ervell, and Simon Spurr are 2010’s menswear nomi nees. Eddie Borgo, Dana Lorenz of Fenton/Fallon, and Alexander Wang were selected for accessories. “From our point of view, of a corporation, it’s really great to be able to use the corporate muscle to help people in the industry, and especially to help young talent,” ex plained Swarovski of her company’s emerging talent awards. Michael Kors will be the re cipient of the Geoffrey Bean Lifetime Achievement Award. “It’s a total sur prise!” exclaimed Kors upon hearing the announcement. “It’s very excit ing. Next year will be my 30th year in business. I never think about it in terms of lifetime, but of course, it has been a lifetime in fashion. I still feel like a kid, I feel like I just started.” Von Furstenburg announced thqt the Board of Directors of the Advertise Here! Other award recipients will . include Burberry’s Christopher Bailey for the International Award, Vogue editor Tonne Goodman for the Eleanor Lambert Award, Paper Magazine’s Kim Hastreiter for the Eugenia Sheppard Award, and Iman for the Fashion Icon Award. This year’s CFDA Fashion Awards will take place in the Alice Tully Hall of Lincoln Center on June 7.
