Flooding in the Northeast Kristen Gallagher, Staff Writer The week of March 29 left the northeastern United States drenched and, in many places, completely flooded. In ^ode . Island, several towns experienced 5 inches of rain or more; the Pawtux- et river, which runs through Rhode Island, rose to over 20 feet-nearly 12 feet above flood stage,, accord ing to CNN’s digital article “Rain is Over but Not Problems in Water- Logged Northeast.” The rain finally started to diminish on March 31, leaving hundreds of homeowners to salvage their soaked belongings from their homes. Rhode Island governor Donald Carcieri stated in a news conference that Rhode. Island is, “looking for some positives here [since] the water ha[d] begun to recede.” He reported that there “had [been] some bad accidents but no fatalities.” Governor Car cieri also noted it was the worst flooding in Rhode Island in 200 years. According to Cranston Police Lt. Stephen Antonucci, his city has “historic flooding going on in places [they]’ve never had flood ing before. Many bridges around the northeast have been washed out, leaving many families stranded in their flooded towns. A Fox News article reported that the town of West Warwick was a “distressed community” because of its low- income residents and estimated losses to the town’s businesses of about $730,000 in revenue during the flooding. Special concerns are being given to health issues; of ficials are urging “people exposed to floodwater to wear long sleeves and wash their hands regularly to avoid bacteria and viruses.” Residents of many areas have been given tax filing extensions, and several organizations have pledged extra funds to help rebuild the communities. Education For All? A CORE 404 Report and Effort Brooks Ann Williford In September of 2000, world leaders met in New York , and adopted the United Nations Millennium Declaration, which essentially outlined a new global partnership to erase poverty and to address other major issues facing the world. From this declaration came the eight UN Millennium De velopment Goals, set for comple tion in 2015. The second goal is to achieve universal primaiy educa tion. This goal will be met when all children are able to complete a full course of primary schooling. As Americans, we take going to school for granted. However, children in developing nations do not have such a luxury. This is particularly true for girls, since in many coun tries, boys’ education is the prior- SUPER “SUITE’’DEALS 3 BEDROOM/ 3 BATH $499 4 BEDROOM/ 4 BATH $479 \ ...Includes ALL utilitiesIIIITI NO DEPOSIT , NO APPLICATION FEE NO FEES AT ALL! § H H 9 % M H % M H H OR What’s in it for you? For example, in Sub-Saharan Africa, only half of the girls who enter primary school actually fin ish the entire course. In southeast Asia (excluding India) only 69% of children finish their full course. This is compared to developed na tions, where 99% of children finish primaiy school. Fortunately, there has been some progress toward achiev ing this goal. The number of chil dren enrolled in primary schools is rising. However, according to the UN, without accelerated ac tion, most countries will not meet this goal by 2015. The two biggest challenges facing these countries are inequality of access and finan cial strain. Core 404: Needs of Fami lies is working on a service project to bring awareness to this UN goal. There will be a school supply drive held from April 12-16. Donation boxes are located in the Science and Math building, Cate Center, and the Oaks apartments. The supplies will be sent to help with primary education in Afghanistan.
