Welcome to Meredith!
Welcome, incoming freshmen,
transfer, and 23+ students. The
staff of the Meredith Herald (our
campus newspaper) has made a
special issue just for you! Read
through these pages to get great
information from current and
former Meredith women about
academic life (see below), Hills
borough Street (page 2), or even
dating a State boy (page 4). We
hope that this issue may inspire
you to join us on staff this year.
Have a great first week!

You’ve packed all your things,
unpacked those precious remnants of
home, and settled into your new dorm.
Before classes start on Wednesday, go
ahead and give yourself a break - sit
on your new bed, take a breath, and
close your eyes. College is going to
be an experience - a word we here at
Meredith are fond of sa>’ing. As a for
mer freshman, I want to give you just a
few words of wisdom that I hope you’ll
find helpful.
You’ve already picked your classes
for this semester, but what if you
get into them and you’re, not so sure
they’re right for you? Well, that is
when you need to know how to drop

a class. If you decide you want to get
out of a class, you may do so within the
first five days of class. Just go to the
registrar’s office (on the ground floor of
Johnson Hall). Remember not to drop
below 12 hours per semester - that
would make you a part-time student
and you could lose your laptop.
All freshmen also have a Student
Advisor and Faculty Advisor already
assigned to them - these are resources
you’ll want to take advantage of! Both
advisors can guide you on what classes
you should take if you already know
what you want to do. They can also
help you talk to professors to see if you
want to take a class just to get exposure
to another subject. Taking a good mix

of General Education and “interest”
classes your first year is a good idea
because you won’t really have time to
do that once you declare your major.
If you’re undeclared, those “interest”
classes are especially important because
they help you explore possibilities for
majors, something you’ll have to decide
by the end of your sophomore year.
It’s a good idea to know that the work
load, class structure, and courses in col
lege are very different from high school
In your first week of class, your profes
sors will probably be more lenient than
they will the rest of the semester, and
you’ll need to stay on top of your work.
You are capable of passing and excelling
in all classes at Meredith as long as you
stay dedicated and seek help when you
need it. Speaking of help needed...the
Learning Center is a great place to start
if you find you’re having trouble. Check

The last thing I’ll leave you with is
the fact that Meredith has an enormous
amount of extracurricular and scho

advantage of. Check the front section of
