Ask the Techie
Featuring Julia Houtchings
It’s 3AM. You have a project due at 8 that your
professor said must be uploaded to Digital
Locker. Your project is finished, but you have
absolutely no idea how to upload it to the
site...Have you ever found yourself in situa
tions like this one, or just want to know how
to do something simple on the computer, like
put a funny caption on a picture? Perhaps you
want to know the best way to find certain
information online. Either way, the Techie is
here to help.
Technology can be frustrating and downright
confusing, but instead of banging your head
on the keyboard, submit a question to the
Techie. Every week the Techie will answer a
question that a reader submits related to com

Masdar City: An Experiment in
Renewabie Energy on a Municipai Scaie
Meghan Grady, Staff Writer
When you first see images
of the new experimental metropolis
Masdar City, the futuristic designs will
make you feel like you are looking at
screen shots out of a Star Wars movie.
According to the Masdar Initiative
website, Masdar City, located in one
of the world’s most sustainable urban
developments, is powered by renew
able energy.
Situated ten and a half miles
from downtown Abu Dhabi, United
Arab Emirates, it is made for compa
nies, schools, and families who want
to focus on renewable energy and
clean technology. Renewable energy
comes from natural resources such
as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and
geothermal heat. It is used for all the
same purposes that electricity, or oil
are used for. Masdar City has rooftops
made of solar power panels, one of the
most popular forms of renewable energy
used today.
According to the August 28,
2009 Designboom article “ LAVA wins
first prize for Masdar - world’s first sus
tainable city in UAE. Giant umbrellas,
with a design based on the principles
of sunflowers, will provide moveable
shade in the day, store heat, then close
and release the heat at night in the plaza
of a new eco-city”. Construction of this
magnificent city began in 2008 and is
planned to be finished by 2016, with
finished projects opening as soon as fall
2010.

Wolfpack in the House!
Sarah Sugg, Staff Writer
Until I started college, I never
knew the meaning of terms like second
ary, safety, and cornerback. While I’m
still not sure that much has changed, I
now look forward to football season at NC
State like Mr. Wuf with a case of rabies.
There has always been something magi
cal about the beginning of fall, and the
September Fourth season opener against
Western Carolina was living proof. You
could almost hear the sound of optimism
in the air (or was that the vuvuzelas?) as
fans poured into Carter-Finley Stadium
on a beautiful late summer afternoon.
Perhaps it was the recent fall from glory in
an NCAA investigation of the Pack’s bit
ter enemies, the UNC Tarheels, that cast
a hopeful gleam in fans’ eyes, or maybe
Coach Tom O’Brien has given even the
most casual of tailgaters a legitimate rea
son to be excited about the team this year.
Wolfpack fans can look forward to
the return of quarterback Russell Wilson,
who eveiyone thought was in the works
to play professional baseball instead of
continuing his football career. Adding
to the hype is linebacker Nate Irving’s
return to the field after a nearly fatal
car crash last year that sidelined him
for the season. With veteran players
on both offense and defense, NC State
loyal can hope that this season will
bring the best reason to love the Pack
since the 2003 Tangerine Bowl victory
of Philip Rivers’ reign.
The season opener was
indeed promising as the Pack put
up 48 points on Western Carolina.
Russell Wilson had a great outing as
expected, passing for over 300 yards
and 4 touchdowns. Dean Haynes was
the leading rusher for the Pack with
69 yards and 1 touchdown. TJ Gra
ham led receiving with 96 yards and
2 touchdowns. If the Pack can keep
up this kind of momentum, it seems
that Tom O’Brien’s boys are ready to
give fans a reason to celebrate their
sometimes roller-coaster but always
steadfast allegiance. However, true
test will not come until later confer
ence match-ups.
There were many Meredith
students in attendance at Saturday’s

of previous seasons, there is no reason
for the red and white to disappoint.
Gloriously enough, fan spirit
has rarely been crushed by the team’s
performance and tailgating has never
failed to be almost as fun as watching
the drunken guy in front of you curse
the refs, and football season in Ra
leigh will continue to be central to this
enchanted time of the year. Wolfpack
in the house, indeed!
game. Among them was senior Nata-
leigh Timberlake, who is hopeful that
the Pack will make a good showing for
her last year of college. She said of her
experience, “It’s such a great time just
being there and hanging out with my
friends outside of Meredith. I also enjoy
the Wolfpack so much because my boy
friend goes to State, so I want to sup
port his school. I am really hoping for a
great football season, since it’s our last
year as students!” Given a fresh chance
and out from underneath the shadows
