Second Annual Holiday Art Sale to be Held by Meredith Art Rebecca Brodney, Staff Writer Are you ready to start holiday shopping early or looking to sup port your fellow students and their, artwork? Come to Meredith’s second annual holiday art sale, sponsored by the art department and held on Friday, November 19th from 2-7 and Saturday, November 20th from 11-4 in the Gaddy-Hamrick building. The art department’s holiday art sale was pioneered last year by professors Janet Link, Cameron Johnson, and Eva Roberts. Their goal in creating the event was to increase the aware ness of art department programs, to bring new visitors to campus, and to allow students to experience the way that the art business works. Last year, the sale raised over $2500; of the profits, artists kept 75% of the sell ing price, a larger amount than what a private gallery would yield, and the. remaining 25% went into a fund to be used for the MASS (Meredith Art Students Support) Grant. Last year, this grant aided two art students by funding approximately $1500 for their independent projects. The projects, proposed by students Sherry Defilippo and Kristen Gallagher, allowed the students to explore^interests beyond their classroom requirements, and the grant supplied money for materials to complete the projects. Sophomore Kristen Gallagher, MASS grant recipient, is using her grant to create a new body artwork that focuses on the birds of North Carolina. She is focusing on objective drawing and painting, with printmaking as a supplemental medium. In objective art, the artist draws what he or she sees. In effect, it is a focus on realism. Kristen noted that she is “seeking to get back to drawing from life - I’ve been painting so long that I’ve started to miss really sketching.” Kristen noted that the grant “allows (her) to explore more about the birds of North Carolina than just looking in a book or even listening outside. It is really an extension of the bird songs I hear at Meredith daily and the feathers I collect, and a way for me to talk about these animals.” Gallagher and Defilippo hope to show their work at a presenta tion at Celebrating Student Achievement in the Spring. This year at the art sale, work produced by various art students, alum ni of the art department, and faculty of the art department will grace the halls of Gaddy-Hamrick. There are photo courtesy of Cameron Johnson items such as drawings, prints, silk scarves, screen-printed t-shirts, jewelry, photography, ceramics, hand-painted wine glasses, custom holiday cards, picture frames, hand-made ornaments, and more. The greatest part? None of these items cost more than $100. This year will also feature a Meredith 2012 Art Department calendar with the works of 12 students, including work by the 2010 MASS grant recipients Kristen Gallagher and Sherri di Filippo. All of the promotional work and designs are done and created by Meredith’s talented art students. Beat Recap: Moogfest 2010 A. VH..V ml iftf photo courtesy of Moog Music, Inc,. In our October 13th issue, we reported on Moogfest—an electronic music festival coming to Asheville over Halloween j - weekend. I attended the October 29th-3ist event and would say that it was a great success. Offering musical perfor- y mances from bands such as MGMT, School of Seven Bells, Jonsi, Massive Attack and Four Tet, the festival featured large and small acts and pro\ided a great range of musical interest. The Asheville, NC setting added to the festival’s charm by pro\nding great local food and stores to explore during the day and well-tuned music venues of many sizes j . for the nightly shows. And to top off the setting and the event itself, the crowd was full of Halloween spirit-dressed up in extravagant costumes and excited for every show. Highlights of my Moogfest experience included performances by Bonobo and R.ID2, e.xploration of downtown Asheville, and meeting people dressed as everything from Alex of Clock- Orange to the cast of Alice and Wonderland. Hopefully I’ll see you there next year.
