The 2011 Fall Sports Season has be
gun! The Avenging Angels soccer, cross
country, and volleyball teams have
been hard at work preparing for the
competition to begin. This preview'will
feature a quick update from each of the
teams and include information about
season predictions, key players and
biggest challenges.
Soccer:
The Meredith Soccer team is look
ing to defend their reputation as one
of the biggest competitors in the USA
South. The team was predicted to fin
ish second in their conference behind
Christopher Newport University. The
Avenging Angels are hard at work hoping
to win the USA South Conference Cham
pionships and earn a spot in the NCAA
tournament. The Angels are looking to
captains Sarah Murray, Annah Kane and
Kimberly Williams to lead the team to
success. This could prove to be'chal
lenging as 70% of the team is made up
of underclassmen. The Avenging Angels
are known across the conference as be
ing one of the toughest competitors. This
year’s team plans to uphold that legacy
and obtain a winning record.
“We strive to play the best soccer pos
sible every time we hit the field,” stated
Coach Paul Smith. “If we play our very
best game, the sky is the limit for us!”
Cross Country:
The Avenging Angels Cross Country
team has been training hard, hoping to
improve upon last year’s third place fin
ish in the USA South Conference. The
team’s goal this year is to be among the
top twenty teams in the NCAA South/
Southeast Region. The 2011 Avenging
Angels squad has several talented ath
letes bringing a great level of depth to
the team. The top seven runners are com
pletely interchangeable with time. Each
team member is working hard to increase
their 5k and 6k times in order to get the
best time possible in meets.
“We are a young team with nine of our
runners new to collegiate cross country,”
said Coach Amy Olsen. “We are looking
Jillian Curtis, Staff Writer
to Juniors Megan Beebe and Morgan
Youd to provide a vital role for guid
ing freshmen in both practice and race
day competition.”
Volleyball:
The Meredith Volleyball team is
looking to prove themselves as a pow
erhouse in the USA South Conference.
The team is filled with many talented
players and is led by Seniors Mary-
Beth Finnagen, Emily Anderson, and
Rebecca Yow. Last year’s MVP, Ju
nior Cori Spade continues to domi
nate offensively and has already been
awarded USA South Volleyball Player
of the Week. Although being picked to
finish sixth overall in the conference,
the Avenging Angels are working hard
to finish games and have already won
six out of their eight games so far this
season.
“We have a great team chemistry
on the court. Our overall goal is to
finish as one of the top four teams in
the conference. We have a very expe
rienced starting lineup and have been
training very hard. Our'^players are
conditioned and mentally prepared
for matches,” commented Coach Fiona
Barkley.
All of the Avenging Angels sports
teams are determined to have a suc
cessful season and do their part to
represent Meredith College athletics.
Be sure to come out and support the
teams during their games and meets!
