Whether you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day with someone special, by yourself, or with friends, see ing Meredith College’s production of The Sound of Music should be added to every Meredith faculty, staff and stu dent’s to-do list. The Sound of Music will be performed from Tuesday, February 14th to Sunday, February 19th in Jones Auditorium. From the 14th to the 18th, the show will run every night at eight o’clock. The last showing, on the 19th, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are free to Meredith faculty, staff and students, and are only 10 dol lars for adults and five dollars for seniors and other students. The Sound of Music will be di rected by Meredith’s own Catherine Rodgers, who believes that The Sound of Music is “an important piece with an important message.” When asked why the theatre pro gram chose The Sound of Music for Meredith, Rodgers said, “We look for a lot of women’s roles, and we had not done a Rogers and Ham- merstein piece in a long time. So, we wanted to be able to draw in the children and community to both audition and watch.” Rose Turchi, a sophomore at Meredith who is majoring in music and minoring in theatre, will be playing Maria. Steven Roten, who is a staff member in Meredith’s theatre department, will be playing the Captain. Roten’s four-year-old daughter will be play ing the youngest child in the Von Trapp family, Gretl, which will be a definite sight to see. There were a total of 82 auditions. Rodgers said that she was “amazed at the talent at Meredith. . . it was great to see students from all majors come out to audition. It was really difficult to narrow it down to the 32 cast members that we have.” According to Rodgers, every cast member has been “working hard to bring a high quality production to the Meredith College community.” Although this is Rodgers’ first time directing The Sound of Music, she maintains that her favorite part of directing any production is “seeing it come to life on its own. I have a vision that I try to impart to actors and I hope they come through, but at the end, it is out of your hands. But seeing it go from the page to the stage is a wonderful experience.” Rodgers said that one of the most difficult parts of directing this pro duction has been “working at night because the children start to get tired and fade out.” However, she also commented that as frustrating as that can be, it can be really ador able. The Sound of Music will be based on the original musical by Rogers and Hammerstein. This production of the musical is slightly different from the popular film version that most people are familiar with. Al though the story lines'are very simi lar, there are a couple of songs that are in the original musical version that are not in the film version and vice versa. The Sound of Music has already set a new record for the having the largest number of ticket reservations that Meredith has ever seen. With expectations so high, an ticipate a successful production.
