Commit to Be Fit Jennifer Cash, Contributing Writer Ready, set, commit to be fit! On January 30, Meredith President, Dr. Jo Allen joined students, faculty, and staff to kick off campus wellness Commit to Be Fit Challenge. The crowd gathered at Weatherspodn Gym and then walked a mile to kick off their commitment to be fit. Partici pants filled out commitment cards that are now on display on the Com mit to Be Fit board in the Cate Center. Participants could join in partner pairs or on their own and will be tracking their physical activity through April 1 on the Commit to Be Fit tracker. At the end of the 8 weeks, any one who submits their trackers will be eligible to win prizes. Those who complete 6 of the 8 weeks will be entered to win one of the grand prizes. Currently over 175 people have committed to the challenge. Allen says, “Meredith’s commitment to being fit is yet another sign of the ways this remarkable community reaches out and supports each other.” The challenge is for participants to be physically active for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, for 8 weeks. The Commit to Be Fit website says that the challenge is not about losing weight but instead about getting the community moving to feel better and to promote healthy practices. The goal is to get those healthy practices to remain as lifelong habits. Allen says, “Whether faculty, staff, or student, we all know the pres sures and the pleasures of participating in and contributing to a highly charged academic environment. At a time when we are already busy and called on to do even more, it is imperative that we support each other in taking care of ourselves.” Commit to Be Fit is sponsored by Be Active North Carolina, a state- ■wide initiative to empower North Carolinians to live healthy and physi cally active lives. According to the Be Active website, the organization “uses a community-based approach to help individuals and organiza tions establish policies that make physical activity and good health the easy choice.” Susan Drury-Rohner, assistant professor in the Depart ment of Nutrition, Health, and Human Performance, is one of the lead organizers of the program. Drury-Rohner says that Be Active has done similar programs in the past: “We just played with the name, and then created our own program outline.” Weekly newsletters are being posted on the Commit to be Fit website and Facebook page. Drury-Rohner says the newsletters “help keep folks engaged and provide them with resources to help with their physical activity plan.” The firs1>newsletfer featured a workout from the UNC basketball team and gave good benefits of exercise for college students. Some of the benefits were increased energy, better sleep patterns, better cognitive function, reduced depression, and prevention of weight gain/ loss. Druiy-Rohner says the Commit to Be Fit team is working on creat ing “fit mobs.” Instead of flash mobs, fit mobs would have people gather for some sort of organized physical activity. Be oh the lookout for fit mob announcements to come soon. Drury-Rohner says the most beneficial part to being part of Commit to Be Fit is the “opportunity to connect with peers who are working to wards the same goal.” To find out more information about the Commit to Be Fit challenge visit the webpage at www.meredith.edu/wellness/ committogetfit.htm, or join the Meredith Commit to be Fit Facebook page. Confessions of an NFL Fanatic Maitlyn Healy, Staff Writer Crystal Rodriguez is a freshman psychology major and a proud NFL fanatic. Whom do you like? “The Carolina Panthers. I also like the Cowboys (when they’re not playing the Panthers) because that s my dad’s favorite team.” Who is your favorite player and why? “Steve Smith because he is amaz ing! He has always been one of the strongest players. You can tell when he plays because the Pan thers always win. If we don’t put him in, we lose. Sometimes he’s left out because he’s not the most mod; it shows that he cares about the game. He doesn’t need out it shows me that he really wants to win and isn’t in the league just for money. I also love Cam Newton after this season. He is the best rookie I’ve ever seen.” image via Ciystal Rodriquez sportsmanlike, which can be j to show so much aggression, ] Who is your least favorite player and why? “Though he doesn’t play for the Panthers anymore, Jake Delhomme would be it. Delhom- me used to be the team’s quarterback. He wouldn’t pay attention to where he was throw ing, and he wouldn’t throw it to the right players. He would always throw an incomplete pass or an interception.” Which NFL team is your least favorite and why? “The Atlanta Falcons because the Falcons fans, at the sports bar I went to at least, were so obnoxious. The fans made me hate the team.” What did you like best about your team this past season? “Cam Newton. He broke so many records. He was the first quarterback to get more than 10 rushing touchdowns in a season with over 4,000 passing yards, which is pretty amaz ing.” What are you hopeful about for next season? “I hope the Panthers can make it to the playoffs. Now that Newton has a year under his belt, I hope they can get there.” What do you like best about the off-season? “I like to watch the draft picks, but I would rather watch the football games. Honestly, the off-season is pretty boring.” ' What do you hate most about the off-season? “I hate that I don’t get to see my “football family.” My “football family^’ includes all of my dad’s friends, with whom my dad and I watch the game with every Sunday. As a fellow fanatic, what is your favorite part about being an NFL fanatic? I like it because it makes me kind of different from other girls. There are not a ton of girls who actually love football and have a true appreciation for it.” What did you think about the Super Bowl? “The Super Bowl was amazing. The Giants won, which is the team I was rooting for. I loved being around all of my football family and my dad. I was literally biting my nails because during the last fiye minutes of the game, it was close, which always makes for a good game; however, for it to be that close, the big game just blew me away. I cannot wait until next year because (fingers crossed) my team could be in the Super Bowl.” Elections Results collected by Emily Hawkins Campus Wide: SGA President: Jade Rice SGA Vice President/Senate Chair: Pooja Ghai SGA Seci’etary: Sara McLaughlin SGA Treasurer: vacant Student Life Chair: Kristen Gallagher Honor Council Chair: vacant Elections Board Chair: Emily Hawkins WINGS President: Paula Meredith RHA Chair: Francesca Bugler AMC President: Christina Klimvakis Apartment Association Chair: vacant MRA President: vacant MEA President: vacant |CAB Chair: vacant ■MCA President: vacant 2013: Class President: Michelle Cox Class VP: Kelsey Suther Class Secretary: Hannah Morgan Class Treasurer: Kristin Kirby Class Historian: Maria Adonay Class Cornhuskin’ Co-Chairs: Anna Barefoot and Christina Cole Class Stunt Co-Chairs: vacant Class Honor Council Reps (2): Rachel Atkinson and vacant Class Elections Board Reps (3): vacant Class Senators (3): vacant Class Student Life Reps (3): va cant 2014: Class President: Melissa Gornto Class VP; Yailyn Polanco Class Secretary: vacant Class Treasurer: Lacy Pfeiffer Class Historian: vacant Class Cornhuskin' Co-Chairs; Lorri Cole and Biyana Bass Class Stunt Co-Chairs: vacant Class Honor Council Reps (2): vacant Class Elections Board Reps (3): vacant Class Senators (3): Mollie Schrull and Whitney Williams Class Student Life Reps (3): va cant 2015: Class President; vacant ^ Class VP: uocant Class Seeretaiy: vacant Class Treasurer: Alexis Trell *' Class Historian: Marlena Brw\yn( Class Cornhuskin' Co-Chairs:^'"* Samantha-Kate Shuford and-Sa- ‘ mantha Hodges Class Stunt Co-Chairs: vacant Class Honor Council Reps (2):, vacant Class Elections Board Reps (^): * vacant ' .
