Whines & Gripes from the Office of the President Here you go... my pet peeves: 1. People who pass without speak ing or acknowledging your pres- ence. We’re a small campus and tight-knit community. So even if we don’tknow each other’s names, we should at least smile, say hi, and know we are contributing to the warm welcoming environment we all deserve. 2. That the pollen has prevented us from taking sandwiches outside, especially to the amphitheater, for lunch. 3. The orange cones used to mark off no parking zones around campus—they make it look as if there are potholes and construction in odd places where there aren’t. 4. The slow elevator in Johnson Hall. Although I like taking the steps, sometimes I’m really loaded with books, papers, etc. and need to take the elevator. I guess I should be grateful for an elevator at all though. 5. That there is a section of the Herald for “whines and gripes” but no section for praise, thanks, and congratulations .. .may I start? Thanks to everyone for making my first year so phenomenal! We ihave a lot of work to do, but this is •/a fantastic school with a terrific aca demic reputation and outrageously great faculty, staff, and students. We need to practice e.xpressing our gratitude! Meredith College Cribs: The Massey House information and images collected by Maitlyn Healy The Massey House was built in early 1970s and founded by Dr. Massey, a dentist. Fact: Dr. Massey also coincidentally pulled Jo Allen’s mom’s wisdom teeth. The Rundown • Approx. 8,000-10,000 sq. ft. • 7 bedrooms (including 2 mas ters) • 6 bathrooms • 5 Fireplaces • Approx.i2 foot ceilings • Fact: Allen said “There is a lot of wasted space in this house.*^ Study Allen replaced an old, brown leather couch with the new red one. The books around fireplace were originally Dr. Knight’s and then given to Ms. Spitzer (Allen’s former classmate). Eventually they were donated to Massey House. Books on the opposite wall belonged to Carlyle Campbell and were donated to Massey House and the pictures on bookcase with Campbell's book show old pictures of Meredith College and students. Fact: Allen is related to one of the women in the "Immortal Ten,” the first ten women to graduate from Meredith. Allen’s aunt married one of the students’ uncles. Basement The basement was the old student center before Cate was built. All of the furniture is original and from the 70s. It is all very low to the ground because furniture back then was made 6" shorter than it is now. Allen said the basement is the "next big project.” She might use the basement as a con ference room because the dining room is not always efficient when she has dinner parties Fact: Allen does not like to be in the basement because basements creep her out. Guest Bedroom Sun Room J mss- The sun room is Allen’s favorite because “It gets beautiful morn ing sun.” Fact: The floral chaise is her favorite; she had it moved from the first floor master into the sun room and re-covered. Kitchen The kitchen was made for catering. Allen said it’s “not a family kitchen” and usually an event using the kitchen happens at least once a week. There is a a prep station inside and outside, as well as has a separate freezer outside ■. next to prep station. 2 sinks, 2 ovens/stoves, 2 re frigerators, 2 dishwashers and an ice chest that looks like a wine cooler can all be found in the kitchen. Fact: In fridge were left overs from events because she doesn’t really like to - cook. Her favorite snack is boiled peanuts. Her favor ite food is Eastern North Carolina BBQ. Other Facts about the Massey House •Light switches are usually outside of the rooms they operate for. •The house was easy for Allen to get adjusted to because she realized that her grandmother had a house in South Carolina with the same basic floor plan (some rooms are switched to opposite sides of the house, and her grandma’s house was much smaller). • Her master has a walk-in closet, bathroom, vanity area, and workout room. •She has seen deer, a gray fox, turtles, a possum, an owl, and squirrels in her backyard. •Allen made multiple changes to the house after moving in, including painting over the taupe walls with a cheery yellow. The yellow paint on top of the crown molding is “twilight sun” and on the bottom is “rock candy.” She got rid of the brocade wallpaper in entryway and floral wallpaper in kitchen and restored the carpeted stairs to the original wood with a runner. She also reupholstered most of the furniture. Meet Meredith’s Bachelor Bachelor is two and a half years old and was found abandoned at a street fair in Danville, NC and was eventually handed over to a lady in Greensboro. Allen was looking for a new dog because her dog of 15 years died not too long ago. She found his picture.on PetFind- er.com and emailed the woman. The current caregiver was excited and said that he deserved to be with hun dreds of women who would love him at Meredith (she realized Allen was the president after reading her email signature). Allen drove to Greensboro, picked him up, and has loved him ever since.
