Meredith Leaders Give Advice Cody Jeffery, co-assistant editor While many Meredith students commonly complain about yucky din ing hall food, the cost of printing, boy hours, and parking tickets, other stu dents take the initiative to help change and appease some of the common complaints that they hear every day. By taking advantage of the wonderful leadership opportunities on campus many students are making the differ ence for their peers. At the conclusion of the 2013 Stu dent Elections, many students earned the positions that they campaigned so vigorously to obtain, while others at tended student speeches and voted for the candidate of their choice—our own little democracy. MRA President, Honor Council Solicitor General, White Iris Circle member, and Student Advisor, Caitlyn DeBona finds herself more than just involved on-campus, she loves it: “I think it is important to be involved on campus.,.so that you have a voice. You should not just complain about how you do not like something, you should be proactive and find out how to go about making a difference.” Freshman Abigial Lorentzen, Class of 2016 Fire and Water Dinner Co- Chair, also sees the importance of participating in on-campus activities by saying that “although I don’t par ticipate in student government, I am very active with Meredith traditions for the Class of 2016.1 wanted to be the Co-Chair of the Fire and Water Dinner because I love planning events and I want the dinner to be a night that we will never forget.” Although DeBona and Lorentzen value their positions on campus, other students are still hesitant to participate for other reasons. Freshman Autumn Bridges said, “I would participate more on-campus if I thought I could make the necessary time commitments. I just don’t want to let anyone down.” DeBona believes that students have to be willing to put themselves out there and “find a club or organization that you are passionate about and start helping out! [T]hey will welcome you with open arms.” Campus leaders are emphasizing how being able to run and obtain so many dif ferent leadership positions on campus is part of what makes Meredith special; it’s one of the assets that separates Meredith from large universities and programs that allow no room for advancement. Do something good for yourself and for your campus “by getting involved and making your Meredith experience the best that it can be,” said Lorentzen. Or as DeBona puts it: “Push yourself to branch out of your comfort zone, attend leadership conferences at other colleges, and use the resources that Meredith has to offer.” Dr. Andrea L. Bolland Gives Lecture Marzia Nawrozi, staff writer On March 18, Meredith College hosted “Ecstatic Vision and the Mirror of the Divine: Bernini’s Saint Teresa in Context Lecture” by Dr. Andrea L. Bolland. In 2000 Dr. Bolland published a highly regarded essay on Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne, “Desiderio and Diletto: Vision, Touch, and the Poet ics of Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne” in The Art Bulletin. She also has written on art and humanism in Padua and she recently she contributed a chapter, “From the Workshop to the Academy: The Emergence of the Artist in Re naissance Florence” to Renaissance Florence: A Social History edited by Roger Crum and John Paoletti. While Dr. Bolland was showing images from Bernini’s Saint Teresa in details, she shared her own opinions and under standing. In the lecture. Dr. Bolland ex plained how people from all over the world go to Rome to visit Cornaro Chapel where the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, designed by Gian Lorenzo Ber nini, is located. People who visit this place become amazed by the figures, paintings and lighting. The Chapel is divided into ground and space and there are a plethora of images. Angels are on the space, some holding books. One angel holds a flower; the other holds a message from Teresa’s life. Dr. Bolland says, the paintings tell us stories of young boys going away from home to fight. In the right corner you see Teresa experiencing the rising. Black and white images looking down and dancing skeletons. All of these figures illustrate one of Bernini’s key aims: to show bodies in order to show the soul, shares Dr. Bolland. Dr. Bolland emphasized that Bernini’s Saint Teresa differs from 17th century art because it looks at a larger and broader literature and religion. Bernini made art the way he viewed and looked at the life - from a broad yet nuanced perspec tive. Under the leadership of Head Coach Lauren Scott and Assistant Coach Kate McKinley, the Avenging Angels La crosse team’s first season is underway and going quite well. As of March 6, the women are 2-2 with wins over LaGrange (8-7) and Ag nes Scott (13-7)- Also helping lead the team this season are captains Lottie Meadows, Andie Stuber, and Lauren Delucia. Sophomore Captain Lottie Meadows says “it’s such a great honor to represent this team and the pro gram. The other captains and I really work hard to help out our other team mates and the coaches.” Andie Stuber, a junior goalkeeper and captain of the team adds: “It’s an incredible honor to be one of the first captains of the Mer edith lacrosse team because I’ve have been trusted to help lead the inaugural team and to help set traditions that will be followed for years to come.” This year will be a building year for the team as Meadows also noted “be cause the athletic department added the sport so soon and hired our coach this past spring so she didn’t have a recruiting year like many other schools have. This has impacted our team but I also feel this has made our team stronger. We have several girls that have never played before but they have picked up the sport very quickly and are doing an amazing job.” Danielle Lee, a sophomore For ward on the Meredith Basketball team stepped up and took on Lacrosse in her off season. “I’m an athlete and the opportunity to play a new sport was intriguing to me. Coach Scott told me that Lacrosse is an athlete’s game and that I would be good at it so I figured why not try it. I am happy it’s the first year so I have the opportunity to try,” explains Lee. Not only do these women work hard on the field, but they form relation ships that will set the tone for future Lacrosse teams that will represent Meredith. Freshman Riah Sumter ex pressed her feelings toward this team by saying, “I love the team. Our teamwork on and off the field shows how close we are. Even on our day off from lacrosse we spent time together. We are a family!” ''We have several girls that have never played before but they have picked up the sport very quickly and are doing an amazing job.” These hard-working ladies will be competing against both conference and non-conference competition until their season ends in mid-April.
