ARTS “"ENTERTAINMEKI Buckwild Star Found Dead in Vehicle (( Cody Jeffery, Assitant Co-Editor The new MTV series, “Buckwild,” also known as the “redneck version of ‘Jersey Shore,’” became a massive hit after its first season aired earlier this year. The show “Buckwild” follows a group of young adults trying to have fun in Sissonville, West Virginia. The group’s crazy stunts include anything from just hanging out in the “holler” to turning a dump truck into a swimming - pool. But while filming the second season of “Buckwild,” tragedy struck Sission- ville, and an entire nation was shocked by the unexpected death of one of the show’s stars, Shain Gandee. On Monday, April 1st Shain Gandee, 21, and two of his uncles, David Gandee, 48, and Donald Myers, 27, were found deceased in Gandee’s Ford Bronco. Gandee, one of the show’s most popular characters, was known for taking his truck out to mud- ding holes for hours at time, but when the trio didn’t return home that evening, Gandee’s fam ily reported the three missing on Sunday, March 31st. According to CNN, the sheriffs office later released that foul play was not suspected and that they found “the vehicle...partially submerged in mud. ...[I]ts muffler was below the surface. Mud covered the lower part of the Bronco’s passenger side door, but the driver’s side, where the younger Gan dee sat, was free.” Due to the inability of Gandee’s vehicle to release emissions from its muffler, carbon monoxide gathered in the vehicle and resulted in the deaths of all three men—this scenario was later confirmed after autopsies were completed on all three victims. At this time, all production and filming processes for the second season of “Buckwild” have been halted. And MTV recently released a statement about Gandee: “We are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Shain Gandee, and those involved in this tragic incident. We are waiting for more Sandee via www.kanawhasherlff.us informa tion but at this time, our main concern is for the Gandee family and their friends. Gandee had a special connection with one cast member in particular, Cara Parrish, Gandee’s summertime crush that refused to let him out of the friend zone. After hear ing the news of Gandee’s death, Parrish tweeted, “This is the emptiest I’ve ever felt. Please pray for Dale and Loretta [Gandee’s parents].” As unexpected as Gandee’s death is, it can surely be expected that his family, friends, and fans will not heal from this tragedy for a very long time. When I met with the two Music Department professors to discuss their upcoming perfor mance, Stephenson opened the conver sation by pressing play on a Youtube clip and asking, “Have you heard this? You must have heard this. Everyone’s heard this.” Before I could answer, Waddelow followed up with “Well maybe she doesn’t live in our world, Ed,” turning to me to add, “but it is used in a lot a movies.” The banter never quit and their energy was infective - as I’m sure it will be for audience members when Stephenson joins the Waddelow-led Raleigh Symphony Orchestra (RSO) for their May 5th European Gems concert. The concert will feature Stephenson as the guitar soloist in the performance of a Spanish concerto - Joaquinj Rodrigo’s Conci erto de Aranjuez. A con certo is a musical composi tion in which a soloist is accom panied by an orchestra. A guitar concerto is especially rare and Rodrigo’s composition is the premiere guitar concerto for a contem porary guitarist - making it a especial performance both for Stephenson and the RSO. Concerto de Aranjuez is in three movements — Allegro con spirito, Adagio and Allegro gentile. The most popular movement is the Adagio. It is often used in television, film and media - explaining why Stephenson thought Edward Stephenson via Brian Schell I must have heard it before. Composed in 1939, the piece premiered at Palau de la Miisica Catalana in Barcelona, Spain. In the premiere performance, Regino Sainz de la Maza was the featured guitarist and he was accom panied by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Barcelona. The conductor was Cesar Mendoza Lasalle. In the local May 5th performance, Edward Stephenson will be featured as the solo guitarist and will accompanied by the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra as conducted by Jim Waddelow. Both Ste phenson and Waddelow are members of the Meredith Music Department. Waddelow serves as the Director of Instrumental Activities, and Stephen son is a professor of guitar. Outside of Meredith, Waddelow is also the Music Director of the Raleigh Symphony . Orchestra, and Stephenson is a Span ish and Nuevo Flamenco guitarist who erforms t venues cross orth rolina. he two Tofes- ors have .vorked ogether n rejects ith the eredith lympho- y but are excited about a partnering for a pub lic performance of this scale. The Concerto de Aranjuez will be performed on May 5th at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. The program will also include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8. Admission is free for Meredith students and faculty and $20 for the public. ASK GIGI Dear Gigi, I am going to be graduating next December. I have always identified myself as a part of the class of 2013. All of my friends and I have celebrated traditions together since our arrival at Meredith College. Cornhuskin’, Tea for Two, Alice and Wonderland...every thing. The problem is that I am going to be missing out on possibly the most important tradition with them on May ilth. I want to be happy for them, but I can’t help feeling slightly sad that we won’t be celebration it together. I don’t want to bring my friends down at this special time, but I really get upset when they talk about it. Help! It is completely natural to feel left out in a situation like this. However, while you may be feeling sad for your self, you need to realize that these are your best friends and this is their time . to shine. You all have spent four years together, and I am confident that you will be friends throughout the rest of your lives as well- regardless of your graduation date. You need to encour age and show excitement for them, because this is one of the most exciting time in their lives. Go to the ceremony and be the loudest person cheering. Know that they too will be there in De cember to cheer you across the stage- and all of the attention will be on your special day. Focus on having the best end of the semester with them, and know that you have your whole lives ahead of you. Have a fabulous end of semester! Love, Gigi
